Method of Statement For Steelgrid

The document provides guidelines for installing slope protection using Maccaferri's MAC.R.O System steelgrid MO macmat. It outlines important notes about material characteristics and planning installation. The methodology includes preparing the slope surface, placing and connecting the macmat rolls from top to bottom with anchoring, and using a bottom steel rope to collect debris while allowing debris removal.

INSTALLATION GUIDELINE FOR SLOPE PROTECTION

USING MAC.R.O SYSTEM
STEELGRID MO MACMAT

1.0 IMPORTANT NOTE

The methodology of slope protection suggested in here applies to combination of

Maccaferri MAC.RO. SYSTEM – Steelgrid MO Macmat as the surface protection
medium. Thus, it is important to ensure that material used for this application shall have
similar physical characteristic and mechanical properties as recommended in the Maccaferri
specification and technical data sheet or the following suggestions may not be valid. For
simplicity the word “SGMO Macmat” is used to describe the combination of these two
materials.

Maccaferri does not supply soil nail and anchor accessories etc and these are to be sourced
from approved suppliers.

To minimize wastage during overlap, it is recommended to carry out “mapping” of the site to
determine the exact length of the SGMO Macmat rolls, in consultation with the
manufacturer’s representative. This exercise should be carried out before placing the order.

2.0 INSTALLATION METHODOLOGY

2.1 SLOPE SURFACE PREPARATION

Slope surface shall be prepared as per the designer’s specifications. Loose rock particles and
unstable soil which could detach easily from the slope surface shall be removed.

2.2 PLACING OF SGMO Macmat

SGMO Macmat shall be hauled to the top of the slope and shall be rolled down to the bottom
with roll length going from top to bottom of the. The top loops of SGMO Macmat are fixed
to the top of the anchorage as shown in figure 1. If manual haulage is not possible, use
mechanical or motorised means (either crane, winch or helicopter).

New rolls shall be placed in the same direction touching the adjacent roll such that the
selvedge steel wire ropes of both rolls can be connect using HR- Link. The HR-Link is a
high performance, light-weight accessory used for the connection of adjacent mesh panels
for installation of SGMO Macmat. (refer figure 2)

The top edge of SGMO Macmat shall be anchored at the crest of the slope until the hard
strata to restrain the rock fall, or as per designer’s specification. It is recommended to
maintain anchorage spacing at 2.8m to enable efficient stress transfer to anchorage.
Additional anchorage can be installed at other locations if required.

2.3 DEBRIS COLLECTION

The bottom of the SGMO Macmat shall be fastened under a bottom Steel Rope 8mm
diameter passing through the bottom anchor, with the drapery extending 1.0m beyond the
bottom Steel Rope. The bottom Steel Rope shall be tightened sufficiently at interval of 20
panels, to ensure that the drape is pressed tightly against the slope face. It shall be anchored
with a minimum depth of 2m into rocky strata or as per designers recommendation (refer
figure 1 for details).

The bottom Steel Rope is detachable and allows the net to be folded up for clearance of
debris, during maintenance. The net shall be fastened back to the bottom Steel Rope after
clearance of the debris.

The bottom of the ditch shall be covered with material suitable for damping the residual
energy of the falling rock, thus limiting the danger of its rebounding on to the carriageway.
The material could be sand, fine aggregates, gravel, etc
