RSLogix Gateway Config

This document provides instructions for configuring a Rockwell Automation NT 50 gateway to communicate with a CompactLogix PLC using RSLogix5000. It describes setting up the NT 50 using SYCON.net to configure EtherNet/IP parameters like IP address. It then explains adding the NT 50 as a module in RSLogix5000, setting its properties to match the EtherNet/IP adapter, and downloading the project to the PLC. When complete, the NT 50 LEDs should be solid green, indicating proper communication is established.

1 Document Scope
The intention of this documentation is to show the user how to configure a
Gateway such as NT 50 or NT 100 or NB 100 to communicate with a
Rockwell 1769-L32 processor module using RSLogix5000. This document
will not cover the entire scope of the RSLogix5000 software and it is
expected that the user is familiar with this software and the 1769 controller
connected to it.

2 Example System
The example system used in our configuration example consists of the
following devices.
• 1769-Power Supply
• 1769-L32E Processor
• 1769-QB16 (Not used in example)
• 1769-IQ16 (Not used in example)
• End Cap
• RSLogix5000 Software
• NT 50
The NT 50 Gateway device is connected to the L32E via Ethernet hub/switch
or directly using a cross over Ethernet cable. IP address and subnet mask
must be within the range to communicate.

3 NT 50 Configuration
The NT 50 Gateway adaptor is configured by using the SYCON.net on the
DVD delivered with the product. Please insert this DVD and install the
software. After the install of the software the first step will be to configure the
Gateway. This is done as follows.
3.1 NT 50 Setup

Execute the program SYCON.net.

Drag and drop a blank NT 50-xx-xx device from the device catalogue to the
configuration screen. Double click the NT 50 icon and configure primary and
secondary protocol first. (The example uses Profibus-DP Slave to
EtherNet/IP Adapter conversion).

Selecting primary and secondary network protocol

Leave this dialog and a screen should appear as shown below.

Main NT 50 Setup Screen

3.2 EtherNet/IP configuration

Right click the NT 50 icon and select EtherNet/IP Adapter configuration.

Selecting EtherNet/IP Adapter configuration

In the example our Gateway adapter will have four(4) bytes of inputs and
four(4) bytes of outputs and the IP address shall be 10.0.0.101. Since DHCP
is not wished, we have enabled IP Address and Netmask settings. These
settings are related to the user’s particular system and should be set
accordingly.
Setting the Ethernet/IP adapters parameters
After the configuration of EtherNet/IP adapter continue to configure to set up
the primary Profibus DP-Slave protocol and data mapping between both
protocols and execute a download to the NT 50 Gateway device finally.
The Gateway will then be ready for Ethernet/IP communications.

4 RSLogix5000 Configuration
The configuration of the 1769-L32E will be done by using RSLogix5000.
Open this application and create a new project that matches the system
1769 configuration.

4.1 Add New Module

In RSLogix5000 under the I/O Configuration folder right click on the 1769-
L32E module and select New Module. The following screen should appear.
RSLogix Select Module Type Dialog Box

Select ETHERNET-MODULE Generic Ethernet Module to add the NT 50

device to the scan list. Once this is selected the following module properties
dialog box should appear.
4.2 Module Properties

The configuration of the module properties should reflect the characteristics

of the EIP adapter connected. In our example the dialog box is as follows.

RSLogix Module Properties Dialog Box

Configure the IP Address of the Gateway which was done previously in the
SYCON.net parameters. Our example device is set to 10.0.0.101.
Connection parameters should follow the example. Please note that the input
area size is four(4) bytes or two words more than what was configured
SYCON.net. The additional four bytes or two words contain status
information about the EIP adapter. The definition of this information can be
found in the EIP Adapter manual. Input assembly instance is always 101 and
output assembly instance is always 100. The configuration assembly
instance is set to 1 and 0 size.

4.3 RSLogix Download and Run

After completing the configuration of the new module download the project to
the CompactLogix PLC and go to Run mode. The LEDs on the NT 50
Gateway should be in a solid green state. This indicates that the PLC and
the adapter are communicating properly.
