SUBJECT: HOUSING

RE: TERM PAPER GROUP WORK

DUE DATE: MAY 9 & 11 FOR BLOCK RESPECTIVELY

TOPIC: HOUSING SITUATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

The se lements are made up of physical elements, such as shelter and infrastructure, and services which
are required by a community, such as educa on, health and recrea on. The quality of life in the
se lements is largely determined by the availability of the facili es and services and their accessibility to
the popula on.

Since the environmental impact of human ac vi es is usually concentrated in se lements, those

intrusions alter the quality of the natural environment, o en resul ng in hazardous effects on the well-
being of the man. Not all environmental interven ons, however, produce nega ve consequences but the
environmental impact in the se lements is a serious problem which should be given utmost importance
by the different na ons of the world.

The Philippines is in a situa on of rapidly increasing popula on which poses serious constraints on the
environment as well as the capability of the government to provide basic services. The pa ern of human
se lements in the country has been characterized by growing urbaniza on.

The con nuous influx of migrants into premier ci es and urban centers results in overcrowding and
increased demand for housing, infrastructure and services. Consequently, greater Environmental
problems, such as pollu on, poor sanita on, inadequate garbage collec on and disposal, inadequate
sewerage system, traffic conges on, and prolifera on of slum and squa er se lements, become very
evident. Metro Naga, for instance, has to face all the environmental challenges it is confronted with at
present. While the improvement of the quality of life in human se lements has been considered “the
first and most important objec ve of every human se lements policy”, the significant interac ons
between development and environment can no longer be ignored.. It is now a necessity for a country to
be concerned with accelera ng economic growth and looking a er the environment at the same me in
order to set the condi ons for produc ve and sustainable human se lements

Given this wide range of problems affec ng the environment of human se lements, relate these to
some families in Naga Urban-Poor Communi es or nearby.
a) rapid popula on growth, migra on and urbaniza on,
b) inadequate shelter and basic ameni es,
c) overcrowding and urban decay,
d) environmental degrada on, especially through waste discharge and other forms of pollu on,
e) lack of services and related infrastructure in rural and urban se lements, especially water supply and
sanita on,
f) impairment of the cultural heritage,
g) health effects and deteriora ng living condi ons.

For your required submission, make a term paper regarding your interven on and exposure to
communi es concerning your project. Choose a family of a specified community and refer to above
range of problems that directly affects them and the community as well. The composi on of your paper
is as follows:

the date of the deadline in the center of the page.
