But that afternoon I could not. The threads of words were scattered apart and torn. There were
long gaps of silence during which I stared aimlessly at the river. She bent over her empty cup of
coffee turning it around on its saucer, I could only see her head of thick hair and her pointy,
straight nose. She would suddenly raise her head when I fell silent and say go on... go on. But
words didn’t come.
We want out of the café to where my car was parked. I would drive her to the office where she
worked, I would drop her off and pretend to go to work myself. When we reached the car, she
said: I would like to take a stroll if you do not mind, do you mind?
Unlike her, she walked beside me slowly13. We barely walked, she stopped and said in a firm
voice: Listen, I don’t want to see you anymore, forgive me but it’s better if we don’t see each
other again. I think I fell in love with you and I don’t want that. I don’t want it after everything I
went through.
I knew what she went through, so I was silent for a moment then I said: as you like. And watched
her fade away quickly.

Ten different recipes can be created from a single duck2: the bones become soup, the wings are
mixed with spinach, the breast were sliced into pane or fillet, the thighs were deboned4 which
were then used in sandwiches, even the head was crushed and turned into tahini-like pickles.
Yasmeen Soliman
Poor me! Imagine how I felt when the doctor told me that I am ill, and must eat and drink
sensibly. Pickles are forbidden. Fatty food is an abomination of Satan’s handiwork and must be
strictly avoided by foodies.
I shouted like poet Tarafa ibn al-Abd: now the belly of earth is better for us than its surface!
