Assignment On Geotechnical Engineering Design I Date 20

The document provides 5 geotechnical engineering design problems for a 4th year civil engineering group assignment. The problems include: 1) designing a combined footing, 2) designing an isolated footing, 3) designing a combined footing for two columns, 4) designing a strap foundation, and 5) determining dimensions and designing central column strips for a mat foundation. The document specifies loading and soil conditions, material properties, and required outputs for each multi-part design problem.

Assignment on Geotechnical Engineering Design I Date 20/06/2016 E.C
Target Group: - 4th year Civil Engineering Section-A
Work in groups with maximum number of members = 7
1. Design a rectangular combined footing using the conventional method. With the loading
condition given in the table below.
Given fck = 30 MPa (column and footing) fyk = 400Mpa qall = 100 kPa

Fig. problem 1

2. Design an isolated footing for a square column, 450 mm × 450 mm, reinforced with 8–20ø
bars, and carrying a service dead load of 1300 KN and service live load of 1000KN Assume
soil with a safe bearing capacity of 300 kN/m2 at a depth of 1.5 m below ground. Assume
C 25 grade concrete and S 400 grade steel for the footing, and C25 concrete and S 400 steel
for the column. Do not assume the thickness of the footing initially rather calculate it based
on shear (one-way & two-way shear take the larger thickness from the two shear
requirements).
3. Design a combined footing for two columns C1 (400 mm × 400 mm with 4–25 φ bars) and
C2 (500 mm × 500 mm with 4–28 φ bars) supporting axial loads P1 = 900 kN and P2 =
1600 kN respectively (under service dead and live loads). The column C1 is an exterior
column whose exterior face is flush with the property line. The Centre-to-Centre distance
between C1 and C2 is 4.5 m. The allowable soil pressure at the base of the footing, 1.5 m
below ground level, is 240 kN/m2. Assume steel of grade Fe 415 in columns as well as
footing, and concrete of M 30 grade in columns and M 20 grade in footing. Compute the
thickness of from the governing shear (one-way or two-way shear).

4. Given Column 1 size 30x 40 cm & Reinforcement 420, Column 2 size 30x 40cm
Reinforcement 420
Ultimate soil bearing pressure, qult = 100kPa
Steel, fyk = 300MPa
Concrete fck= 20MPafctk = 1.5 MPa,
Required: - Design a strap foundation for the given loads shown in Fig. below.

5. The plan of a mat foundation is shown in Fig. Problem 5 (Note: All column sections are
planned to be 0.5 m 3 0.5 m.) with given center to center spacing of columns.
Determine the dimensions of the mat foundation and draw the shear force and bending
moment diagrams for all the strips both in x and y directions. And design one central
column strip in each direction. Use fck = 30 Mpa and fyk = 400Mpa
Allowable bearing capacity of soil, Qall = 200kPa. Assume a reasonable thickness of mat
for initial calculations and check it for one way and two way shear at critical sections.
