Physics - Notes: Energy

There are two main types of energy: potential energy, which is stored energy due to an object's position or condition, and kinetic energy, which is energy from an object's motion. Potential energy includes gravitational potential energy from an object's position in a gravitational field, strain energy from elastic materials, and chemical energy stored in chemicals. Kinetic energy includes sound energy from vibrating objects, electrical energy from moving electric charges, internal or thermal energy from heated substances, and light energy that we see. Mechanical energy is the energy from moving objects or from objects' positions.

physics notes ~ energy

Two main types of energy:

Potential energy: energy that is stored in an object due to its position or
condition.

Kinetic energy: energy that an object possesses due to its motion.

potential energy
gravitational potential energy
Gravity is a force of attraction between any two objects in the universe.

The energy possessed or acquired by an object due to a change in its

position when it is present in a gravitational field.

The farther an object is away from the ground, the more gravitational
potential energy.

strain energy
Also called elastic potential energy.

The energy from elastic materials that can be easily squashed,

stretched, or bent but spring back to its original shape.

Example: hair tie, spring, trampoline

chemical energy
Energy that can be stored in chemicals from which a material is made.

Food, fuel, and the chemicals in an electrical cell (or battery) are
examples of stored chemical energy.

Example: batteries, energy in our body.

kinetic energy
sound energy
Energy that is produced when an object is made to vibrate.

Example: the sound produced by guitar.

Passes to all three forms of matter.

electrical energy
The movement of electric charges through a conductor.

Conductor examples: copper and graphite.

internal energy
Also called thermal energy.

When a substance is heated, this movement increase.

light energy
The electromagnetic energy that we can detect with our eyes.

Can travel in space unlike sound.

mechanical energy
Mechanical energy (kinetic energy or potential energy) is the energy of
either an object in motion or the energy that is stored in objects by their
position.

Mechanical energy is similarly any form of energy that's directly

associated with motion or with a force.

Examples: An electric fan converts electrical energy into mechanical

energy.
