A Comparison Study Between Objective Test and Subjective Test

The document discusses the differences between objective and subjective tests, with objective tests relying on choices between answers while subjective tests are open-ended, and it notes that both types of tests have benefits and that most good classroom tests contain elements of both. It also provides details on techniques for each type of test, such as multiple choice questions and essay questions, and how they are administered and scored.

Abstract
The subject of this research nominated is (a comparison study
between objective test and subjective test). In this research I want to shed
light on these two aspects of test and made a compression between them
by using suitable techniques for objective test and subjective test.

1. Introduction
Many researches and applied linguists talked about on objective test
and subjective test and made many differences and varieties between
these two of tests. The test can be classified into two groups according to
scoring or making objective test and subjective test and both objective
test and subjective test are good for classroom test.

2. Compare between objective test and subjective test

Objective tests are called objective because their scoring doesn't
depend on the personal judgment or opinion of the scorer. Subjective tests
are called subjective because their scoring depends on personal judgment
or opinion of the scorer, techniques used in objective tests include
multiple – choice items (MCI), True / false items, matching items,
transformation sentences, re-arrangement items and fill in the blanks or
gap filling.
On the other hand the techniques used in subjective tests include
essay writing, composition writing, letter writing, reading aloud,
completion type and answer these – question.
To answer an objective test, the testee has to select his answer from
two, three, four or even more alternatives and objective test usually have
only one correct answer. Besides that to answer as objective test, the

1
testee has to plan and write his own answer by using his own words and
expression.
Further more objective tests need much time and effort to write since
the examiner has to provide the answers as well as the questions so the
objective test requires more careful preparations than suitable test. But in
subjective test the examiner needs to write few question without their
answers.
In objective tests, this type of test type of test is more reliable because
it gives a stable score. But in subjective test, this type of test is not
reliable because it doesn't give a stable score.
Objective tests are used to test structures, vocabulary, comprehension
and sound discrimination. On the other hand subjective tests are used to
test ideas, culture, coherence and creating.
In objective tests this type of test encourage guessing, difficult to
write, simpler to answer, easy to score, suit for a large number of testees,
and this type of test can be scored by a machine.
Beside that in subjective test don't encourage guessing, easy to write,
difficult to score suit for a small number of testee. And this type of test it
can't be scored by a machine.
In objective test can be used to test specific area of language but in
subjective test can be used to evaluate overall achievements.
Furthermore, objective tests require recognition more than production but
in subjective test require production as well as recognition. An objective
test is a type of discrete point test but in subjective test is a type of an
integrative point test.
An objective test is a type of close – ended atomistic, a system –
referenced and it applicative test and replicative test. On the other hand,
subjective test is a type of open – ended test, a holistic and replicative and
it isn't applicative.
2
An objective test depends on student's knowledge, it is a valid test
and students need a short time to answer in objective test. But in
subjective test depends on student's experience, it is invalid test and
students need along time to answer in subjective test.
Finally, A good class room test should be contained both subjective
and objective. Heaton (1997: 33) says that "always remember that most
good test contain both objective and subjective types of item."

3. Multiple – choice item (MCIS)

Multiple – choice items (MCIS) are one of the most widely used
types of items in objective test. (MCIS) can provide a useful means of
learning and testing in various learning situations provided that it is
always recognized that such items test knowledge of grammar,
vocabulary, etc. rather than the ability to use language. Although they
rarely measure communication, they can prove useful in measuring
student's ability to recognize correct grammatical forms.
So multiple – choice items can help both teacher and student to
identify of a difficulty. A question or (MCIS) test the students problem
for which three or four answer are given. Only one of these answer is
correct. By the way in this type of test the examiner or teacher isn't
influenced by the neatness of the students' handwriting or the beauty of
his expression. The answer are scored rapidly and accurately by the
examiner or teacher.

3
Multiple – choice item (MCIS) is usually divided into three groups or
parts:

1- the Stem 2- the correct choice or correct answer 3- the distracters.

1- The stem: The initial part of each multiple – choice item is known as
the stem. It can be a complete statement, an incomplete statement
and question.
2- The correct choice or correct answer or correct option or key. The
answer can be a word or group of words.
3- The distracters / or it called in correct options or in correct answer.
The distracters can be two or three or four options.
They are the options which surrounded the answer so that the students
with in adequate knowledge can't find answer.

4. Answer these question

The term answer these question is used to refer to these questions
which elicit a completely subjective response on the part of the testees.
The response required many range from one – word answer to one or two
sentences.
Marking for answer these questions which require answers in
sentences, it is frequently advisable to award at least two or three marks
for each correct answer.
Finally, a reading comprehension passage may be followed by one or
two multiple – choice, items, several true / false items, a few completion
items and one or two open – ended items.
