CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is an infectious disease caused by a virus called SARS-
CoV-2. The disease primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person talks,
coughs, or sneezes. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since
spread to become a global pandemic. The supposedly 2 weeks of lockdown became months. It
not only affected the adults but also the students. COVID 19 affected the education sector
because face to face classes were no longer allowed. It paved the way to online learning. In this
way we can reduce social contact and avoid the spread of the virus. Online learning offers
teachers an efficient way to deliver lessons to students. By maximizing the technology, teachers
can use a number of tools such as videos, PDFs, podcasts, to deliever their lessons. It goes
beyond traditional textbooks and made learing fun and efficient. With online learning the
students can set their own pace, which can provide them with a better chance of adequately
absorbing and retaining information in your coursework. When learning from home the students
can save. One way is by not having to commute to class every day. Online learning will not only
help you achieve your educational goals but can also help you gain new skills that will be
beneficial when embarking on a new career. To complete your online studies, you will need to
become familiar with a number of digital learning tools. For students, teachers, and the
educational system, the switch from face-to-face to online learning has been a drawn-out and
difficult process. The lack of government funding is the fundamental reason that face-to-face
learning is still not a reality. In order for schools to make this modification to their curriculum,
the government must give them greater funds. As a result of being able to communicate with
their teacher through video conferences or a messaging software, pupils will study more
effectively. As a result, teachers will be able to give more individualized instruction as opposed

CHAPTER 2
A new coronavirus outbreak known as COVID-19 started in China in December of 2019 and
quickly expanded to other parts of the world in the next few months. This infectious condition is
brought on by a brand-new coronavirus strain that targets the respiratory system (World Health
Organization, 2020). In 191 nations and territories as of January 2021, COVID-19 had infected
94 million people and resulted in 2 million fatalities (John Hopkins University, 2021). Over 1.5
billion children have been impacted by the huge disruption in this pandemic has caused in the
educational sector. It has compelled the government to postpone national exams, as well as
forcing schools to temporarily close, stop teaching in-person, and carefully adhere to physical
distance. These incidents have fuled higher education’s digital revolution and tested it’s capacity
As the fight to halt the virus's virulent spread continues throughout, schools and other school
environments were inevitably pushed to transition to fully online learning. An online learning
environment is one that manages academic programs and delivers synchronous and
asynchronous instruction using the Internet and other technical means (Usher & Barak, 2020;
Huang, 2019). Asynchronous online learning takes place without a set schedule for students,
however synchronous online learning incorporates real-time interactions between the teacher and
undergone tremendous transformation. For instructors to facilitate evaluations and for students to
engage in lectures, new e-learning platforms are being developed. It has been established that
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which only offer 01online content,
………have also gained popularity. Higher education's adoption of e-Learning tools suggests
that more data may be evaluated, enhancing the quality of instruction. Numerous studies have
examined the benefits and difficulties of large data analysis in higher education in recent years.
For instance, a study by Gasevic et al. shows that time management strategies have strong
The COVID-19 pandemic quickly expanded the use of online learning, video streaming, remote
work, and other technologies. We can see that private chat messages, two-person calls, multiple-
person meetings, and team chat messages are the most used remote collaboration tools.
Furthermore, a number of solutions for aiding teachers in the process of online education have
surfaced. Additionally, mobile learning has developed into a substitute that is appropriate for
some kids with limited technology resources. According to various surveys, students' feedback
on online classes indicates that they were happy with the lecture delivery style of the teacher and
The pandemic has caused a considerable deal of loss among high school students. Shelter-in-
place suggestions have prevented what should have been a time of increasing independence.
Numerous social and educational events, including graduations, proms, sporting occasions,
college visits, and many others, have been altered or deleted and cannot be recovered.
COVID-19 has fundamentally altered how international education is provided. Due to the
pandemic's impact on educational institutions, which affected millions of students, there was the
largest online movement in educational history. Universities had to swiftly transition to virtual
and digital tactics as a result of this abrupt move away from classrooms in many parts of the
world. Many people think that even after the pandemic, online distance learning would remain
popular.
Given the digital divide, significant changes in educational models could worsen equity gaps. A
new hybrid model of education is predicted to emerge. The COVID-19 lockout at one of the
institutions in Egypt caused a sudden switch from in-person to online distance learning. This is
one of the first empirical studies looking at the impact of this change. The grades of 376 business
students who finished a face-to-face course in the spring of 2019 and 372 students who finished
the same course in the spring of 2020 while the school was under lockdown were compared. The
grades of the final exam, course work, and quizzes for the two groups were compared using a t-
test.
Few studies regarding how universities throughout the world have handled the COVID-19
pandemic and how they are currently preparing for the upcoming semester have been conducted
up until this point. To help higher education institutions overcome the lockout, which is
anticipated to last through 2020 and 2021, such an inventory is vital. It might be quite beneficial
to learn about other institutions' past behavior as well as other nations' universities. The potential
influence of COVID-19 on higher education has already been the subject of a significant number
It is suggested that the abrupt change to online learning during the COVID-19 epidemic is a
social phenomenon including culture, technology, and human behavior, where it is important to
and research methods. Having stated that, the goal was to describe the phenomenon both
qualitatively and quantitatively; as a result, a hybrid technique for inquiry that combines
The use of the Internet in teaching and learning foreign languages nowadays has a lot of promise.
Yang and Chen claim that the Internet gives English language learners access to useful language
resources and gives them the chance to communicate with native English speakers. The Internet
enables electronic learning, also referred to as e-learning, which is used to deliver educational
programs to remote learners. It is a formalized online learning environment that emerges from a
By incorporating texts, videos, audio, cooperative learning, and interesting graphics into the
learning process, e-learning ensures that students are actively involved in the learning process. It
has the potential to raise teaching and learning standards, highlight the necessity for higher
education institutions to maintain competitive advantage, and broaden student access to higher
education in this economy of globalization. The integration of learning and teaching in e-learning
through the use of information technology (IT) has reduced the expenses for learners while
The idea of emotional intelligence is important in educational psychology because it can be used
to predict academic performance. This has served as the basis for educators' judgments to raise
kids' academic performance. The personal and social components of the emotional intelligence
concept can be separated into two groups. Self-awareness, self-regulation, and motivation are
examples of personal traits, whereas social skills are an example of a social attribute. Self-
awareness is the ability to identify and comprehend one's own feelings as well as those of others.
It means keeping an eye on and recognizing one's own emotions, wants, and vulnerabilities.
Positive emotion direction and control are achieved through self-regulation, which also enables
people to defer making decisions until enough data has been gathered.
The person deliberates before acting. Students that are motivated are more likely to succeed
refer to a student's social abilities. These qualities enable kids to create close bonds with their
peers and teachers, which in turn improves academic performance. The intellectual development
emotionally intelligent are more capable of handling obstacles in the classroom. As a result, it is
believed that emotional intelligence plays a substantial role in predicting students' academic
period, the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among students increased
significantly throughout the remote learning period. According to the study's findings, a sudden
change in learning styles contributed to intense tension, which in turn caused a significant
The effect of COVID-19-related school closings on student achievement, however, is less well
understood. The acceptance and implementation of digital learning tools and remote learning
were the main foci of the literature on COVID-19-related school closures to date (Andrew et al.,
2020; Grewenig et al., 2020; Maity et al., 2020; Pensiero et al., 2020; Blume et al., 2021).
Every element of human activity worldwide was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,
including education, research, sports, entertainment, travel, religion, social interactions, the
economy, companies, and politics. Because with COVID-19 threats, the entire world was in
anguish, and the situation was difficult to handle, and one of the industries most severely
A growing number of people are learning through online learning methods as a result of the
life. Notably, there has been a considerable change in the way people normally live with the need
for isolation to stop the disease from spreading. The limitations have made the implementation of
online learning in education essential. The study's key findings include the observation that
All in all, despite the fact that multiple studies have shown that online learning is more
successful than traditional learning, there are disadvantages in student engagement, academic
success, and time consumption (e.g. Bernard et al., 2004; Means et al., 2013a, 2013b).
