G10 YAKAL PERFORMANCE TASK 2
The Ash Lad: In Search of the Golden Castle is a Norwegian movie directed by Mikkel
Sandimose. This film depicts Norwegian cultures and beliefs. The characters involved
are originated from Norwegian folktales. The characters of the film are Ash Lad- the
main character, Ash Lads’ two brothers, Ash Lad’s father, Princess Kristin, King Erik,
Prince Raul and Mogens. Though this film is not very popular, we will see if this story
is worth watching or will be a big thumbs down for us.
The story begins with Princess Kristin being forced to be married by the king before
she turns 18 because of the belief of the legend that a sleeping troll known as the king
of the mountains will wake up and make that princess a slave. Princess Kristin
escaped as she did not want to be married. Meanwhile, there was Ash Lad roaming
around, found princess Kristin and offered her to eat. After that they parted ways.
Ash Lad was disowned by his father because of accidentally burning down the house
they were working hard for. Prince Raul met Ash Lad and they did have an argument.
The king demanded that whoever saved his daughter (the princess) would receive a
reward. Ash Lad’s brothers are suspected of poisoning the king and queen. Now, they
need to go for a journey to find Soria Moria Castle, which is made of pure gold and
has a well containing the Water of Life to save the royalties lives. In the forest, Ash
Lad met a troll who gave him a map to go for the quest. In the meantime, there was
also princess Kristen with her own quest. The both sides encountered several
conflicts and tragedy dealing with the trolls, mythical and supernatural creatures.
All of them went on the journey. In the end they defeated the troll by the sunlight to
make it petrified. Ash Lad only asks the king for enough money to repair the house
and the land they’ve lost in the beginning. The end.
The story was amazing. Honestly I’m not really a fan of this kind of genre but I didn’t
expect that I would like it that much. The scenery is good, the actors are very
realistic, the sequence of events are organised, and it showed a lot of cultures from
Norwegians. There are also life lessons along the flow and you wouldn't realise how it
came. Also one thing that really captivated me is how they showed and reflected the
culture and beliefs of Norway. This suits everybody. It’s a movie that is good for all
ages and all tastes.
Another thing that is interesting is the theme. It’s satisfying how the theme is
unwavering and concise. It has a great impact on the reader to be focused and always
try to guess what could happen next. It showed very clearly how they manage to
fight against the creatures but still it depicts lessons and fun things. It will make you
interested until the very end.
In conclusion, the movie The Ash Lad: In Search of the Golden Castle is worth
watching. It’s like a fantasy tour. I learned a lot of life lessons from their adventures. It
made me feel more motivated and inspired to make my new journey and adventure.
It also makes me consider things. In over all, I like this movie and the only thing that I
will suggest is a part two for more adventures
