EBIS2023 - Group Assignment Guideline

The goal of this group assignment is to conduct data analytics for a business problem and suggest improvements using techniques learned in the EBIS 2023 course. Students will form groups of 4-5 to complete the following steps: introduce the business problem and dependent variable, explain the data and variables, process and describe the data, conduct univariate and bivariate analyses, obtain statistical measures and plots, build a predictive model, discuss findings and propose solutions, and provide individual reflections. Groups will submit a 15-page report and individual 2-page reflections by the deadline. Presentations of 18-20 minutes will also be required. The assignment aims to apply analytics to address real business issues.

EBIS 2023 Business Analytics

The goal of this assignment is to conduct data analytics for a business company/event and
suggest design improvement(s) for the company/event, using the visualization and statistical
techniques you have learned so far. Remember that you are taking a business course - you are
learning how to connect the use of the techniques of analytics with real business issues. The
ability to infer the data generation process (DGP) of your dataset, understand relationships
between variables, interpret the data analysis results, and formulate solutions to business
problems is of particular importance.

Recommended Group Size:

4 to 5 students

General Guideline:
You are asked to use R to conduct data processing and analysis unless you have a clear reason.
1. (Group) Introduction. The first important step is to propose the business problem you want
to solve and decide the dependent variable that can reflect the business problem.
2. (Group) Explain your data and variables. In this step, you need to explain where you get the
data and then build up the data dictionary to detail your variables.
3. (Group) Process, transform, and describe data (You may need to transform your data and
deal with the missing values in this step).
4. (Group) Use univariate/bivariate statistical data analysis techniques, such as two-sample t-
test, ANOVA, and correlation, to conduct an initial investigation on the relationships between
these variables and in particular the effect of explanatory variables on the dependent
variables.
5. (Group) Obtain the relevant statistical measures and plot graphs, if appropriate. Explain how
these measures and graphs assist you in understanding the relationship between variables.
6. (Group) Build a model (e.g., multiple regression, decision tree, cluster analysis, or time series
analysis) to identify significant factors affecting the dependent variables. In this part, you
may consider the model building, variable selection, diagnostic checking techniques, and
your procedures/arguments in arriving at/choosing the final model.
7. (Group) Discuss the GENERAL summary and implications of your findings and propose an
ACTIONABLE solution for the business problem. You will need to determine how the results
can help you predict the dependent variable and how the results can affect the business
strategy in the market. Also, please discuss the potential limitations of the project.
8. (Individual) Discuss your OWN REFLECTION on the group project. What was the most
challenging issue of the project? How would you address the issue if you were to conduct
another project? Do you have alternative interpretation(s) or opinion(s) on the findings,
solutions for the business problem, or limitations, and why?
Submission:
1. Deadline: by 11:59 PM, Week 12 (9 Dec). Only submit the soft copy (in word/pdf format) of
your reports.
2. Each group writes and submits a Group Project Report (up to 15 pages) to disseminate the
group’s findings to the instructor and other members of the group. If appropriate, provide
related statistical outputs obtained from the data in an Appendix (free from the page limit).
3. Every group member should write and submit an Individual Reflection Report (up to 2 pages)
to present your own learning / opinion about the project, following General Guideline 8
derived from the results mentioned in General Guidelines 6-7.
4. Submit all the codes (in .R or .Rmd) and the original data your group used for the group
project report.
5. Note that plagiarism is a severe offense. Any group that committed plagiarism will get a zero
for the project.
6. Please name the soft copy of the group project report using the group number and section
number, e.g., “Group1_1001.docx”.
7. The project/proposal must be written in English Language only. Follow the APA guidelines
for references and in-text citations. Provide a complete and accurate list of "References."
Each claim should be supported by at least one citation.
8. Late submissions: Assignment submissions after the due date will be considered late. Late
submissions will be subjected to a penalty of 30% of the total points. No submission will be
accepted after one week beyond the due date.

Formatting:
1. Total Page Length of Group report: ≦15 pages (excluding references and appendix)
2. Total Page Length of individual interpretation report: ≦2 pages
3. Page size: A4
4. Margin: 2.54 cm per Side
5. Spacing: Double Spacing
6. Font Size: 12

Presentations
1. Time: 18-20 minutes+ 5 minutes Q&A
2. Sequence: decided by a lucky draw
3. Print a hard copy of your slides and submit it to me before presenting your presentation.
FAQ
1. How to find the dataset?
You can use any data you like to use. Model Whale (和鲸社区), GitHub, or Keggle can be a
good starting point. You can also use the dataset (e.g., World Bank eLlibrary, RESSET) that can
be accessed via our university library. A large sample size is preferred.
2. What is a good data analysis report?
A good data analysis report is a logical, decisive, and informative one. Please do not waste time
trying those difficult but not applicable methods for your data analysis. Just choose the most
appropriate analysis method for your business problem and clarify why this method is
applicable. Multiple methods or meaningless methods will not help you win the bonus.
3. How to present my work?
Please focus on how to interpret your data analysis results and what would be general
implications you can draw from the results. Explanations are more important than the results!
You have to justify your answer with data analysis - explain your results and codes during the
presentation.
4. Shall I review the literature to support my findings?
You are welcome to review the literature to 1) define your variables, 2) explain your model,
and 3) illustrate the methods you used.
5. Can I use other statistics software/programming languages to analyze the data?
You are asked to use R to do the analysis.
