Different Types of Separating Mixtures

This document discusses mixtures and various techniques that can be used to separate the components of mixtures. It defines mixtures as substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined and may vary in proportion. It then describes homogeneous mixtures as having a uniform composition throughout, colloids as mixtures where microscopic particles are suspended in another substance, and heterogeneous mixtures as having a non-uniform composition. Finally, it outlines several separation techniques including filtration, distillation, hand picking, sublimation, chromatography, magnetism, and decantation.

Mixtures

- two or more substances that are mixed together but

not chemically combined and that may vary in proportion.

Homogeneous Colloid Heterogeneous

A homogeneous mixture A colloid is a mixture in A heterogeneous mixture
has a uniform which one substance is defined as a mixture
composition. Its consisting of that has a non-uniform
appearance and microscopically dispersed composition. In other
composition are the insoluble particles is words, its composition
same, no matter where suspended throughout varies from one location

Techniques in Separating Mixture

FILTRATION
a separation technique used to separate the
components of a mixture containing an undissolved
solid in a liquid.

DISTILLATION
an effective method to separate mixtures
that are comprised of two or more pure
liquids. Distillation is a purification process
where the components of a liquid mixture are
vaporized and then condensed and isolated.
HAND PICKING
manually removing undesired impurities from
a mixture. It basically entails choosing out
substances and separating them from others
by hand.

SUBLIMATION
separation of a solid-solid mixture where one of the
components sublimes (converts from solid state to
gaseous state without forming liquid) upon heating,
leaving behind the other components that are non-
sublimable.
CHROMATOGRAPHY
the separation of a mixture by passing it in
solution or suspension, or as a vapor (as in gas
chromatography), through a medium in which
the components move at different rates.
MAGNETISM
the process of separating components of mixtures by
using a magnet to attract magnetic substances. The
process that is used for magnetic separation separates
non-magnetic substances from those which are magnetic.

DECANTATION
the process of separation of liquid from solid and
other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing
the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or
liquid below.
