Democracy Principles (Primary)

Democracy is a form of government where power is held by citizens who can vote for their representatives. The key principles of democracy are equality, control of power, value of laws, political participation, national sovereignty, and political pluralism. In democratic countries, governance is divided into three branches - the executive branch makes decisions, the legislative branch passes laws, and the judiciary branch ensures laws are followed. Political parties represent different ideas in a society. Spain adopted a democratic constitution in 1978 that guarantees rights and establishes the country's political structure.

Country: Spain
December 6, 1978

The majority of Spaniards approved the

Constitution in a referendum.

National sovereignty belonged to its

people and constitutional monarchy
became its political structure.
Constitution
Most important law

Set of rules that everyone, including

the government and the citizens, must
follow

Says that Spain is a "social and

democratic rule of law," meaning it's a
country where everything needed for
personal development is guaranteed,
and everyone has to follow the law
Constitution
Talks about important aspects for coexistence, such as:

● Rights and duties. For example, education and

healthcare are rights. Paying taxes and obeying
laws are duties
● Functions of state institutions
● Territorial organization of Spain into autonomous
communities and cities

In Spain, there's a special court called the

Constitutional Court that makes sure laws agree with
the Constitution
