LEARNING OUTCOME
At the end of this laboratory session, students should be able to
1. Identify various dimensional measuring equipment commonly used in a basic
engineering laboratory.
2. Apply dimensional measuring equipment to measure various objects
accurately.
3. Compare the measured data measured using different measuring equipment.
Determine the measured dimensional difference using various types of
equipment correctly.
4. Answer basic questions related to the made measurement correctly.
5. Present the measured data in the form of report writing according to the
normal technical report standard and make clear conclusions of the
undertaken tasks.
THEORY
Basic physical quantity is referred to a quantity which is measurable such as
weight, length and time. These quantities could be combined and formed what one
called the derived quantities. Some of the examples of derived quantities include
parameters such as area, volume, density, velocity, force and many others.
Measurement is a comparison process between standard quantities (true
value) with measured quantity. Measurement apparatus complete with unit and
dimension must be used in order to make a proper and correct measurement.
Accuracy means how close the measured value to the standard (true) value. The
precision of measurement refers to repeatable values of the measurement, and the
results showed that its uncertainty is of the lowest degree.
EQUIPMENT
1. Objects of various shape, size, and materials.
2. Stainless steel ruler and caliper.
3. Vernier caliper and micrometer.
4. Weighting scale, measuring cylinder and beaker.
PROCEDURES
1. Linear Dimension
- Based on the object given, find the linear dimension such as length, width,
and diameter by using measurement apparatus provided. State the degree of
accuracy of measured values.
- Record the data into the table provided.
2. Weight
- Determine the weight of each object by using weighting scale.
- Record the data into the table provided.
3. Volume
- Fill in the measuring cylinder provided with water and record the water level
as V0 .
- Immerses each object into that measuring cylinder and record the water
level as V1 .
- The different between V0 and V1 is the volume of the object.

DISCUSSIONS
2. Discuss the difference compared to the procedure.
From the results, we konw there are three different type of measurement
which is ruler and vernier, vernier caliper and micrometer which means the
prosedure for each measurement equipment are different. When using a ruler and
vernier the results is not accurate and sometimes it quite difficult to make the vernier
stay in the position when measuring by using the ruler. While using the vernier
caliper there are some error during recording the results because reading the a
vernier is not easy for non digital vernier. Lastly, the micrometer is the easiest
equipment to get the accurate result but there are some problem when taking the
inner diameter.
CONCLUSION
The conclusion that we make is every equipment has different accuracy and
different way to use it. The most accurate equipment is Micrometer because it have
different size of micrometer to measure different size of object and the SI units is
millimeter(mm). Then, the second accurate is vernier caliper because it quite difficult
during reading the result. Lastly, the ruler and vernier because the vernier can cause
a lot of error that will affect the result and the ruler scale just 0.1mm.
