Learning Episode 1
I. Motivation:
A. Presentation: Today we will learn how to write the general form in standard
equation of a circle and determine the coordinates of the center and
radius.
B. Importance Writing the standard equation of a circle in general form and
determining the center and radius is essential in various real-life
scenarios. For instance, in urban planning, it helps city officials design
roundabouts with optimal traffic flow by identifying the center and
radius of each circle. In astronomy, it is crucial for calculating the
orbits of celestial bodies, enabling accurate predictions of their
movements.
C. Formative At the end of the lesson, I will give you a 10-item test in writing
Assessment: equation of a circle in general form with least 75% mastery level.
II. Prove and
Respond:
(The teacher reviewed perfect square trinomial by completing the square, then
express as a square of a binomial).
A. Review/Drill Direction: Complete the third term to make it perfect square trinomial,
then express as a square of a binomial.
1. x2 + 4x + ______
2. x2 - 10x + ______
3. x2 + 12x + ______
4. x2 - 8x + ______
Expected Answer:
1. x2 + 4x + 4; (x + 2)2
2. x2 - 10x + 25; (x - 5)2
3. x2 + 12x + 36; (x + 6)2
4. x2 - 8x + 16; (x - 4)2
B. Pre-requisite The Standard Equation of a Circle
Skill: The standard equation of a circle with center at (h, k) and a radius of
r units is ( x – h)2 + ( y – k)2 = r2. The values of h and k indicate that
the circle is translated h units horizontally and k units from the origin.
If the center of the circle is at origin, the equation of the circle is
x2 + y2 = r2.

The General Equation of a Circle

The general equation of a circle is x 2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0,

where D, E, and F are real numbers. The equation is obtained by
expanding the standard equation of a circle, (x – h)2 + (y – k)2= r2.

Learning Episode 2: The teacher says: This time, I will give you an example on how write the general
form in standard equation of a circle and determine the coordinates of the center
and radius.

“ I Do”
Write the equation x2 + y2 – 10x + 4y – 7 = 0 in standard form and
determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Solutions:
A. Rearrange/ regroup the equation and transpose 7 to the other
side.
(x2 – 10x) + (y2 + 4y) = 7
B. Make each expression a perfect square trinomial.
(x2 – 10x + 25) + (y2 + 4y + 4) = 7 + 25 + 4
C. Express each trinomial into a square of a binomial. Add the
numbers in the left side.
(x - 5)2 + (y + 2)2= 36

The (x - 5)2 + (y + 2)2= 36 can be written in (x - 5)2 + (y + 2)2=62

This gives a coordinate of center as (5, -2) and the radius is 6.

The teacher says: By this time, we will do together. (The teacher will call students to
participate and answer the questions being asked)

“We Do”

Write the equation x2 + y2 + 2x - 6y –15 = 0 in standard form and

determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 + 2x + y2 - 6y = 15
(x2 + 2x + 1) + (y2 - 6y + 9) = 15 + 1 + 9
(x + 1)2 + (y - 3)2= 25

Center (-1, 3)
Radius: 5
The teacher says: By this time, you will do individually.
“You Do”
Write the equation x2 + y2 + 8x - 4y –16 = 0 in standard form and
determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 + 8x + y2 - 4y = 16
(x2 + 8x + 16) + (y2 - 4y + 4) = 16 + 16 + 4
(x + 4)2 + (y - 2)2 = 36
Center (-4, 2)
Radius: 6

Learning Episode 3:
A. Guided
Practice: Answer and discuss it with your pair. (The teacher will roam around to check the
students’ work. The teacher will then acknowledge the students who got the correct
answer.

Set A (Pairs who are sitting in the 1st and 2nd columns)
Write the equation x2 + y2 - 8x + 8y – 32 = 0 in standard form and
determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 - 8x + y2 + 8y = 32
(x2 - 8x + 16) + (y2 + 8y + 16) = 32 + 16 + 16
(x - 4)2 + (y + 4)2= 64

Center (4, -4)

Radius: 8

Set B (Pairs who are sitting in the 3rd column)

Write the equation x2 + y2 - 6x + 10y – 30 = 0 in standard form and
determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 - 6x + y2 + 10y = 30

(x2 - 6x + 9) + (y2 + 10y + 25) = 30 + 9 + 25
(x - 3)2 + (y + 5)2= 64

Center (3, -5)

Radius: 8

B. Independent The teacher says: By this time, you will do individually/independently.

Practice: Write the equation x2 + y2 + 4x - 4y – 73 = 0 in standard form and
determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 + 4x + y2 - 4y = 73
(x2 + 4x + 4) + (y2 - 4y + 4) = 73 + 4 + 4
(x + 2)2 + (y - 2)2= 81

Center (-2, 2)
Radius: 9

Generalizations? HOTS questions: (The teacher will ask students to

answer the questions.)
How will you rewrite general equation in standard equation of a
circle?
Learning Episode 4:
A. Evaluation 1. Write the equation x2 + y2 + 4x - 8y – 5= 0 in standard form
and determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 + 4x + y2 - 8y = 5
(x2 + 4x + 4) + (y2 - 8y + 16) = 5 + 4 + 16
(x + 2)2 + (y - 4)2= 25

Center (-2, 4)
Radius: 5

2. Write the equation x2 + y2 + 12x - 14y + 36= 0 in standard form

and determine the coordinates of the center and radius.

Expected Answer: x2 + 12x + y2 - 14y = -36

(x2 + 12x + 36) + (y2 - 14y + 49) = -36 + 36 + 49
(x + 6)2 + (y - 7)2= 49

Center (-6, 7)
Radius: 7

1. Assignment:
1. Write x2 + y2 + 10x + 4y – 7 = 0 in standard form and determine the
coordinates of the center and radius.

2. Write x2 + y2 _ 14x + 16y – 8 = 0 in standard form and determine the

coordinates of the center and radius.
