Poets tell us that no matter how long we may live, or how many people we may come to know,
we never forget our first love. If this is true —— and I am inclined to believe that it is true —— then
surely every orchid grower, despite his sophistication, remembers what his first orchid probably was.
Whether a corsage of three immense purple blooms given to a thrilled mother on Mother’s Day, or a
plant whose lovely white flowers brightened a windowsill, the Cattleya was almost certainly the orchid
we first chose to grow.
Who could have predicted that the first artificially raised hybrid Cattleya cross of Cattleya inter-
media and Cattleya maxima, registered in 1859 by J. Veitch as Cattleya Dominiana, would result in the
thousands of Cattleya and related genera hybrids dominating the orchid world over a century later? For,
while orchid hybridizing is almost infinitely varied in the twentieth century, Cattleya hybridizing is
still the main concern of a majority of modern hybridizers.
The genus Cattleya is one of the marvels of the natural world. Perhaps the most consistently
showy of all the natural genera, species once abundant, now in more perilous circumstances, inhabit
areas throughout Central and South America. This abundance of beautiful Cattleya species, bred to those
closely related species from the genera Laelia and Brassavola, has provided a gene pool of color possibil-
ities nearly unprecedented in modern horticulture.
The earliest awarded Cattleya hybrid was Cattleya Brabantiae, a cross of Cattleya aclandiae and
Cattleya loddigesii, awarded a Silver Banksian Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society of England,
shortly after its registration by J.Veitch in 1863. Cattleyas.and their related hybrids continue to be award-
ed today at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Orchid Committee judgings, but it is probably within the
American Orchid Society’s judging system that these magnificent species and hybrids have received their
greatest acclaim. American Orchid Society awards to Cattleya species and hybrids number today in the
thousands. These awards are detailed in the American Orchid Society’s awards publication, the Awards
Quarterly.
The emergence and distinction of orchid judging in Japan has resulted in the fine Register of Awards
published by the Japan Orchid Growers Association. This publication informs the reader of the most
recently awarded orchids receiving their awards within the Japanese judging system.
This present volume, “800 Cattleyas of the World”, is a most praiseworthy attempt to gather to-
gether, under one roof, as it were, the finest Cattleya and related genera hybrids as judged under a variety
of national judging systems. These include not only the American, Japanese and British judging systems,
but those also from countries whose interest in orchids and orchid judging is gaining in experience and in
authority.
To limit the “best” of cattleyas to 800 clones is an arbitrary decision and, of course, a subjective
one as well. You may find that several clones which you consider to be outstanding are not included. On
the other hand, without a doubt you will be fascinated to see and read about many outstanding clones
you perhaps never knew existed, so limited has been their distribution. In this sense, “800 Cattleyas of
the World” is a fine and highly desirable beginning to a continuing compilation of the best which the
modern orchid world has to offer.
Fine photography, accurate and helpful information accompany the carefully selected plants fea-
tured in this volume. The bilingual text, English and Japanese, will certainly expand the audience for this
book. I am delighted to be asked to contribute to “800 Cattleyas of the World”, for, although national-
ities, customs and language may separate us, the love of orchids will continue to be one major force to
bring us together.

The President of ODC.
The Vice-President op A0S. Donald E. Herman
The Cattleya has always been considered the “King” of that large
and diverse family known as the orchid. Since 1 818 when William Cattley,
an English horticulturist flowered a strange plant that had arrived from
Brazil and John Lindley, the noted taxonomist, named it Cattleya labiata,
man has been intrigued by the majesty and beauty of the members of this
genus. The South American “Hero of Liberation”, Simon Bolivar, was
amazed and pleased by thousands ofplants of Cattleya perciviliana which
gave the Venezuelan hills a pink glow. Bolivar was so impressed that the
natives referred to that flower as the Flor de Libertador for many years.
The introduction of each new specie to the European scene caused great
excitement and brought some astonishing prices. Old journals tell us that
in 1887 a single plant of Cattleya trianae brought in 18,375 francs for its
owner. A truly remarkable sum considering the time, which was much
before our inflation of today.
Time has not diminished the world’s enthusiasm for the specie and
hybrids of the Cattleya Alliance. Today the United States and Japan are
probably the two leading nations in producing fine Cattleya hybrids. It is
only fitting that the Japan Orchid Growers Association should produce a
book showing the finest of this group. A publication of this type is long
overdue and will prove a great service to all orchidists. Beginners will be
able to use it in selecting plants as they build their collections. The ex-
perienced hybridizer will find it a valuable reference when studying the
dominance of certain parents and when searching for new directions in
breeding. For many it will be just a source of beauty and enjoyment.
Myself being a Cattleya enthusiast, I look forward to the many
hours of enjoyment and education that I will derive from this book.
