FBC Knoxville Welcomes UT Athletics Icon Richmond Flowers, Jr.

When University of Tennessee star athlete Richmond Flowers, Jr., (1969) speaks at First Baptist Church of Knoxville on November 20, he will do more than tell stories from his standout football career and record-setting track competitions. Mr Flowers speaks from a diverse background, combined with his Christian faith and the inspirational ways it has influenced his life and work. An accomplished athlete in high school, Flowers has set world high school records and defeated Olympic medalists. At the University of Tennessee, he was an All American in both football and track, as well as a member of Tennessees 1967 National Championship football team and was Tennessees first NCAA Track Champion. The accomplishments of Richmond Flowers have not gone unnoticed. He was named a Southeastern Conference Legend in 1998. In 1999, Athlon Sports named him one of the top collegiate receivers in the 20th century. The Birmingham News named him one of the top 25 greatest athletes in Southeastern Conference history. In 2002, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and in 2005, was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. After earning a business degree from the University of Tennessee and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama, Flowers played five years in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, including Super Bowl IV. Mr. Flowers practiced law from 1980 to 1981 with Neal and Harwell in Nashville, Tennessee. He left the practice of law and became a Senior Vice President with REFCO, a futures commission merchant, where he established one of the top sales offices in the United States. From 1989 to present, Mr. Flowers has worked with NuSkin International, a NYSE direct sales company where he assisted the company in their growth to over one billion dollars in annual sales. At NuSkin, he established himself as one of the top 1% of marketers within the company. Richmond Flowers speaks in both worship services in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Knoxville on Sunday, November 20, when we will be joined by the congregation of New Prospect Presbyterian Church.

First Thoughts.... William D. Shiell, Ph.D., Senior Pastor

In 1999, I began a book project in McGregor, Texas, that finally came to fruition as a result of your generous sabbatical in 2010. The result is my new book, Delivering from Memory, published by Wipf and Stock. In 1999, I planned to recite the Sermon on the Mount from memory at First Baptist Church in biblical costume. The day, however, did not go as planned. The music director invited a special guest to perform that morning. Their performance consumed most of the worship hour. I condensed a 25 minute recitation into a rapid 15 minutes. In the process, I learned more about myself than the audience did. In the years since, I discovered a renewed love for delivery and memory. I spent many days as a child reciting King James English but knew very little of its significance. At Baylor, I studied rhetorical criticism under Mikeal Parsons and ever since had several opportunities to perform the Sermon and many other texts. With each performance, I learn more in the process of preparation. The audience remarks afterward, I heard things in performance I never realized before. More recently, something else has happened. Following recitations, people tell stories that the performance brings to mind as they listen. Some are related to the narrative; others are ancillary. All are part of what the ancient world broadly called delivery and memory. Since the publication of Readings Acts: the Lector and the Early Christian Audience, the field of performance criticism has emerged in New Testament studies. My new book attempts to study early Christian texts from the perspective of ancient delivery and memory for reader and listener. Their performances, much like my experiences, affect reader and hearer. The delivery comes from the memory of the performer and the audience. Both remember as they experience the performance. Both are trained in different ways and are linked together by the experience. In the same way, this book would not be possible without attentive listeners who have responded over the years. My hope is this book continues the discussion that began with ancient performances many years ago. Readers and listeners train each other; as we do, we are delivering from memory. We will discuss the book during our 2012 Winter Bible Study February 3-5, but I hope you will enjoy this brief volume before then. Let me extend my personal thanks to Mark and Lisa Moeller for their ministry with us at First Baptist over the past two years. I was saddened to hear that Mark has been called to be music minister of First Baptist Richmond, Texas. Our loss is their gain. Mark's talents in music, coupled with his warmth and pastoral care, will make a great addition to their team. Each member of our staff has enjoyed Mark's presence in the office and been comforted by his encouragement. He has taught us all how "to walk alongside" each other in the name of Christ. I will miss him and Lisa and have enjoyed renewing our friendship and partnership here. We also continue to add our continued prayers for Mark and his family as they move closer to his parents and their children, Nathan & Allie, and Ryan.

Update from Josh & Caroline Smith, Missionaries to South Africa

We wanted to thank you for the warm and welcoming reception you gave our family when we visited back in September. It was a joy for us to share with you our passion and calling and to receive your encouragement and support. It is easy to see that you are a congregation that is passionate about serving God and others. We are now living at Refilwe in Johannesburg, South Africa, and are slowly settling in. We arrived on September 20th with a group of pastors from several CBF churches, who were here for a week to observe various aspects of the ministry in South Africa. While very hectic, it was a wonderful experience as new relationships were made between the organizations we work with here in South Africa and the congregations these pastors represent. We are excited about the possibilities these relationships bring for ministry here in Johannesburg.

The Smiths with the Pastors Group in the Drakensberg Mountains

The past two weeks have been spent adjusting to life here at Refilwe. We have been getting to know the other families who live here and making the cottage we live in feel more like our home. Our daughter Bella seems to be enjoying living here. She loves to play on the playground and harass the cat we inherited with our house. We are also getting started on more of the work we will be doing here at Refilwe. Caroline will soon begin meeting with the children who live here as part of her role as the pastor/social worker at Refilwe. We are meeting with Refilwes staff to plan upcoming volunteer groups and design a volunteer orientation program. We are excited to finally be here and we look forward to the opportunities God is presenting us for service and ministry. Thank you for your continued prayers and support of our ministry and our family as we continue to make this transition. We look forward to hearing about what is happening at FBC Knoxville and hope to have the opportunity to host you here in South Africa soon. Josh and Caroline Smith The Missions Council has voted to adopt Josh & Caroline as our Cooperative Baptist Fellowship missionaries. You can support them by giving to the Global Missions Offering. Keep up with Josh, Caroline, and Bella Smith on their blog at http://www.ujamaaglobal.org.

Montgomery Village Baptist Center Collections

The RAs are engaged in a mission project collecting gently used mens and womens clothing, toys, and small household goods (small appliances, dishes, silverware) and anything else a family might need to make a house a home. The goods will be delivered to the Baptist Center at Montgomery Village near the end of November. There are two boxes located in Trentham Hall near the money collecting table for donations, or you can bring them to the RA room (2nd Floor).

Border Mission Trip

First Baptist is partnering with the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) at UT for a spring break mission trip to the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, March 17-24. In partnership with Buckner, we will be building a house for a family in need. In addition to construction, we will also be sorting humanitarian aid items at Buckners warehouse, hosting a block party, and building bookcases for a literacy project with Spanish-speaking families. The BCM is bringing about 60 students, so van drivers and team leaders are needed. If you cannot swing a hammer, we still have a place for you to serve! For additional information, contact Carol McEntyre at [email protected] or 246-4661.

Mission Groups Help Habitat House

Our RA and GA mission groups recently visited the Habitat House that our church helped build for a local family. Children and adults learned more about what Habitat for Humanity does and how the family is involved in the construction of the house. The group formed a prayer circle and prayed for all of those involved in the work and for the family who will live in the house once it is completed. These groups, along with our Mission Friends, collected snacks for the workers and are each studying about serving our community. The older children are also working on projects for the house. This is a unique opportunity for our children to experience Hands-on Missions. 5

Taking Care of Families in Need This Christmas

At Christmastime, we often feel overwhelmed by the many organizations and families in need around us. First Baptist is working to concentrate our efforts toward meeting these needs. To spread Christs love and hope during the Christmas season, we are proposing the following options for supporting families in need: 1. Adopt a family at South Knoxville Elementary (through Sunday school classes), 2. Give to a family in need in our congregation, or 3. Support the Christmas Brunch. If you choose to adopt a family from South Knoxville Elementary School, your Sunday School Class will be given a family profile and asked to purchase gifts for each child in the family. In addition, Sunday school class groups or individuals are invited to make a contribution to the Benevolence fund, which will be utilized to help families in our own congregation who are in need during the holidays. Please put in the church memo line: Benevolence/Christmas. The Ministerial staff will be working with families within the church to distribute those

Mark Moeller Accepts Call to First Baptist, Richmond, Texas, as Minister of Music
It is with mixed emotions that I submit my letter of resignation as your Associate Pastor. FBC, Knoxville is a wonderful congregation with whom I have been blessed to share ministry. My time with you has opened many new vistas in the precious ministry of reconciliation that our Lord Christ shares with us. I am grateful to you all for your confidence in me as I made the transition from music and worship ministry to administration. I take comfort in knowing that so many passionate and gifted people have walked alongside me in sharing this work. I am also grateful for the several occasions that I lead in worship here at FBC. These times have awakened in me the call to return to the ministry of music and worship. I can testify joyfully that God has woven into my lifes fabric a holy desire to return to a ministry in which I have been blessed for so many years. Most of you know of the health issues that have plagued both Lisas and my families over the past several months. Yes, it goes without saying that distance from family leaves a deep ache in our hearts. The prospect of returning to Texas in order to be closer to our families is very comforting. Still, you have given Lisa and me a new definition of family, for you have been and will continue to be family to us. One of this congregations greater assets is its willingness to open its collective arms to all who enter. From the very beginning, you have made Lisa and me part of a very old and large family that is FBC, Knoxville. Thank you for loving and caring for us in ways that will be treasured forever. Mark Moeller The Personnel Committee invites you to a reception in Mark & Lisas honor on Sunday, November 6, from 3-5 PM in

New Ministry Assistant, Jenny Bopp

Jenny Bopp hails from the small town of Marshall, Minnesota, where she was born and raised among cornfields and dairy cows. In 2008, she graduated from Hillsdale College in Michigan with a degree in Political Science and a minor in French. Before moving to Knoxville, Jenny worked as the Operations Assistant at a non-profit organization near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she met her husband, Chris. Chris is currently in his second year of law school at Duncan School of Law. While in Philadelphia, she was involved in a womens prison ministry through her church, where she also helped establish a dance ministry. Jenny is currently working as the Ministry Assistant to Greg Johannsen, Susan Tatum, and Michael McEntyre, and she also teaches ballet and modern dance at a local dance studio. She feels very blessed to be a part of the ministry team at First Baptist Church and she hopes to bless others in return through her service here.

YOUTH NEWS

Its Time for Fall Retreat!

Fall Retreat is November 11-13. We will once again join with Sharon Baptist youth for an incredible weekend of worship, discovery, fun, and faith. This years theme is from John 15, focusing on what it means to remain in Christ. Speaker Andy Hale will be leading our retreat, and Brandon Edwards, our worship leader from South Africa, will join us as well. The bus will leave the church at 6 PM on Friday, November 11, to head to Smoky Mountain Christian Village for an amazing weekend. Students wishing to arrive late need to contact Jenny Bopp in the church office. The cost of the weekend has been REDUCED from last years price. Get your $85 registration ($80 for additional siblings) in NOW to reserve your spot. As always, friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Do you like to Snow Ski?

FBC Student Ministry is offering a family/youth/college ski trip after Christmas as a chance to get away and connect with one another. We will be traveling to Timberline Resort in Canaan Valley, West Virgina, one of the largest ski slopes in the southeast. We have reserved 36 spots for the trip. Space is first come, first served based on when your deposit is turned in. We will leave FBC on Wednesday, December 28, around 10 AM to travel by charter bus to Canaan Valley. We will stop to pick up our ski rentals along the way. We will be staying in condos within walking distance of the slopes. Each condo has a full kitchen, two bedrooms, and a living area with a pullout couch. The base cost of the trip is $325 per person if you have six people in your condo. For families who wish to rent a condo with less than six people, optional arrangements are available. The slopes open at 9 AM and close at 9 PM. You will have the option to ski all day Thursday and Friday. We will leave early Saturday morning to make it back to FBC in time for everyone to enjoy their New Years Eve plans. Celebrating Grace Hymnal Update

Back in July we placed our order for the new hymnals for our Sanctuary and Chapel. For various reasons, the hymnals were on back order for two months. We have received notification that the hymnals will be in our hands by the first part of November. The Worship Council will work hard to get the hymnals in the pew racks for use beginning the first Sunday of Advent, November 27. Thanks to you, the church, for helping us get this important resource for corporate worship. We are excited about its addition to our church. Please watch future editions of First Light for information on what we will be doing with our old hymnals. We would like to remind everyone to reserve the evening of February 26 at 7 PM for our exciting Hymn Festival, which is the last event in our concert series season. We will officially dedicate the hymnals in that service as a part of the festival. Go ahead and invite family and friends to mark that date on their calendars. It will be a service to remember!
