MY REFLECTION

The calculabtor was developed after my group and I agreed to do a mathematics-related

module. During our practicum, all of us were Mathematics teachers, and we observed that many
students in secondary schools did not know how to use the calculator in class. We identify that, in
schools, there was no exposure to them using the calculator. Therefore, we devised the idea to create
a module using two types of calculators, which are fx-570 MS and the Class Wizz model.
We studied how to use both calculators, which are fx-570 MS and Class Wizz. Both
calculators have different functions and ways of using them. We chose the calculators because they
can be used in secondary schools. After a meeting with the school’s administration, we agreed to
proceed with the module focusing on Form 1 students. After carrying out the need analysis, we found
that the topic that will be discovered in the module is Linear Equations. To make our module more
attractive, we planned to design it based on the user's demand. The color and pictures of the module
have been choosing appropriately.
We acknowledge that this module will benefit educators and students. The first benefit
that we found is increased efficiency. Calculators can perform complex calculations quickly and
accurately, saving time compared to manual calculations. This efficiency is beneficial in situations
where speed and accuracy are crucial. Therefore, using the calculators will help students solve any
questions. We also identify that by joining this module, students will improve their problem-solving
skills, considering that using a calculator often involves solving mathematical problems using
technology. This process enhances students' problem-solving skills as they navigate various functions
and applications, developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. In addition, when
learning how to use a calculator, they can manage time wisely. Calculators can save time during
exams or work, enabling students to allocate more time to understanding and solving complex
problems rather than manually performing lengthy calculations.
This module will also give some advantages to educators. Firstly, they can enhance
teaching methods. Calculator modules can introduce teachers to new and effective teaching methods
for mathematical concepts. They can explore innovative strategies and utilize technology to make
complex topics more accessible and engaging for students. This is because few teachers still lack
knowledge on how to use calculators in the right ways. Mathematics teachers can also enhance
teaching methods by using calculators in other subjects, such as Physics and Chemistry, as these
subjects also involve calculations. Furthermore, when teachers are exposed to how to use a calculator,
they can integrate technology in class. Learning about calculators helps teachers integrate technology
into their classrooms, aligning their teaching methods with the evolving educational landscape. This
prepares students for a future where technological proficiency is increasingly important.
When we came up with the idea to create a module related to calculators, we discovered
that calculators are very relevant and can be applied to real-world situations, for example, in
education and learning. Calculators are employed in academic settings to solve complex
mathematical problems and understand various concepts, such as using a calculator to solve equations
and graph functions or performing statistical analysis for research projects. Besides, it also can be
applied in business and economics, where calculators are used for profit and loss calculations, pricing
strategies, break-even analysis, and currency conversions. For example, it can be used to determine
the total cost of goods sold, calculate profit margins, or convert currency for international
transactions.

After implementing the module at SMK Seksyen 9 Shah Alam, we found that our
objectives for the module had been achieved. We managed to carry out the module for almost 2
hours. A few strengths have been seen after carrying out the module. One of our strengths is that we
can develop practical communication skills. I discovered enhanced communication skills as I
explained the functionalities of calculator modules to teachers and students, as clear communication
is crucial for successful implementation. Moreover, we also improve our leadership skills as
facilitators may discover or enhance our leadership skills as we guide the students through the
module. Effective leadership involves inspiring and motivating others to embrace new technologies
and teaching methods. Other than that, customization skills have also been developed to make the
module so that we learn to customize it to meet the unique needs of the school, teachers, and students,
ensuring alignment with the school's curriculum and goals. Facilitating a calculator module cultivates
a versatile skill set that spans communication, technology, pedagogy, and leadership, contributing to a
more effective and dynamic educational experience.
In conclusion, implementing calculator modules in schools is a transformative initiative
that will benefit educators and students. This pedagogical approach improves teaching practices by
incorporating technology into mathematics education, encouraging individualized learning
experiences, and preparing students to meet future technological demands. The increased efficiency
in teaching and learning, combined with the encouragement of collaborative efforts, represents a
positive shift in the context of education. Calculator modules help improve student understanding and
confidence in mathematics and foster a school culture that values innovation, adaptability, and a
forward-thinking approach to education.
