Basic LAN Configuration 1

This document discusses basic LAN configuration. It defines a LAN as a local area network that provides network communication between devices within 1 km, such as within a building, by establishing physical connectivity and configuring IP addresses, gateways, domains/workgroups, and firewall settings. It lists the key components of a LAN as switches, hubs, repeaters, and servers. It then describes how to establish a physical LAN connection between clients or between a server and clients using switches and cables. It also explains how to configure IP addresses on clients and servers so they are in the same range to allow communication on the LAN.

Basic LAN Configuration

LAN Concepts:
 LAN means Local Area Network.
 LAN means process of providing network communication between
the hosts or devices within a building or around 1km distance by
establishing physical connectivity and configuring the IP address,
gateway, domain or workgroup and firewall settings.
 LAN is possible for single network only.
 LAN covers maximum up to 1 km distance (Within a Building).

LAN Components:
1. Switches Used to link different hosts in same network by
using MAC Address.
2. Hubs Used to link different hosts in same network by
using broadcast address.
3. Repeaters Used to link different hosts in same network at
various frequency/ bandwidth.
4. Server Used to link, control & secure the different
hosts in same network by using broadcast
address & available services and security policies.

LAN Configuration:
1. Establishing Physical Connection:
a) For Client- Client Communication:
 Establish a Physical LAN connection b/w Client PC's
through Switches & Straight through LAN Cables.
(OR)
b) For Server- Client Communication:
Establish a Physical LAN connection b/w Server PC and Server
through Switches & Straight through LAN Cables (or) directly
connect Server PC with Server

2. IP Configuration:

c) For Client- Client Communication:

 My network------------->Properties----------->Change adapter
settings---------> Properties--------->Select IP
Version------------>Properties------------>Enter IP address,
Subnet mask, default gateway address in same range of ip-----
> ok
(OR)
 Go to run------------->ncpa.cpl----------->LAN settings---------
>Properties-------> Select IP Version------------>
Properties------------>Enter IP address, Subnet mask, default
gateway address in same range of ip ---------> ok

d) For Server- Client Communication:

 My network------------->Properties----------->Change adapter
settings---------> Properties--------->Select IP
Version------------>Properties------------>Enter IP address,
Subnet mask, default gateway address in same range of server
ip-----> ok
(OR)
 Go to run------------->ncpa.cpl----------->LAN settings---------
>Properties-------> Select IP Version------------>
Properties------------>Enter IP address, Subnet mask, default
gateway address in same range of server ip ---------> ok
