T1W7L3 Patterns in Data

The document discusses graphs and their use in representing scientific data. It defines trends as describing the general direction of change of a variable, while relationships refer to the correspondence between two variables. Graphs allow identification of trends in data through visual representation and facilitate identifying relationships between variables. Extrapolation is predicting a variable's value beyond the existing data set based on its observed relationship within the data. The document provides examples of using graphs to describe trends, identify relationships, and make predictions through extrapolation.

To be able to understand that graphical representations

allow the identification of trends and relationships in data

• Distinguish between the meaning of ‘trend’ and

‘relationship’ when describing patterns in data
• Use graphs to describe trends in data
• Use graphs to identify relationships between variables
• Use extrapolation to make predictions about variables
Graphs in Chemistry
Graphs are often very useful for representing scientific data. They provide a clear
visual representation and facilitate the identification of trends and relationships.

A scatterplot of data can

sometimes be fitted with a
trendline.
Note the independent variable
(𝑥𝑥-axis) is the one intentionally
changed, while the dependent
variable (y-axis) changes
because of the independent
variable.
Trends in Data
All scientific knowledge is based on trends, patterns and relationships in data.
A trend describes the general direction of change of some variable.
Identifying Relationships
A relationship refers to the correspondence between two variables.
How would we describe the relationship between absorbance and phosphate
concentration from the graph below?
Use the data below to draw a graph of the relationship between atmospheric pressure
and altitude. Draw a line of best fit through the data.
a Describe the trend.
b Identify the relationship between the atmospheric pressure and altitude.
Extrapolation
Extrapolation is the prediction or estimation of the value of a variable beyond the given
data set, based on its observed relationship with the other variable within the existing data
set.
Extrapolation is a prediction only.
A limitation of extrapolation is that
an observed relationship between
two variables will not necessarily
continue.
Extrapolation can be performed by
either:
i. extending the trendline beyond
the given data set, or
ii. finding an equation for the trendline
and substituting in the ‘known’ value.
Making a Prediction
What would be the predicted absorbance for a phosphate concentration of 45 mg L-1?
How did you go today?
Success Criteria
• Distinguish between the meaning of ‘trend’ and
‘relationship’ when describing patterns in data
• Use graphs to describe trends in data
• Use graphs to identify relationships between variables
• Use extrapolation to make predictions about variables

Very happy but I Pretty good but I I think I need to I’ll need to watch I know it’s only
still need to do need to revise review and this lesson again and early days, but I
my text and consolidate practise quite do a lot of review might need to
exercises. with the text a bit. and practice. revisit my options.
