CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The SIWES Industrial Training gives science students approaching their final year the ability to
partake in a pre-professional work experience connected to their course of sturdy and career
interest, which allows a student to be equipped with knowledge on their career choice post
graduating from their university, thereby making the graduate more desirable to employers due
to the experience gained from the program. Towards achieving this, The six (6) months program
was carried out within two companies, which were lumen Christi TV station, Located at 116
lekki-Epe expressway, Lekki, Lagos and Huawei Technologies, located at 3 lekki-Epe
expressway, Victoria island, Lagos
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme was founded in 1974 by the Industrial
Training Fund (ITF), in response to the need for undergraduates to gain work experience and
marketable skill to make them employable upon graduation, it was necessary because most
graduates lacked the relevant skills needed in industry. It was intended as a smooth transition
from lecture room to the outside world, by exposing students to equipment, machineries and
industrial-based skills which are necessary in the real world. It was funded and managed by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for four (4) years before their withdrawal from the scheme due to
the financial burdens. In 1979, the federal government handed over management of the scheme
to both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE). In 1984, the federal government reverted the management of the scheme
back to the ITF (in collaboration with supervising agencies including: NUC, NBTE and the
National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE)), while the funding was to be handled
by the federal government.

CHAPTER ONE
SIWES being in itself strategized for skill acquisition, is designed to expose students in
universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to the real-life work situation that they would
potentially be engaged in after graduation. The SIWES can be said to be a major factor required
to help keep alive industrialization and economic development in the nation. The objectives of
the Students Industrial Working Scheme include:
1 Exposing students to equipment and techniques that may not be available during their course
of study.
2 Provide an avenue for students to acquire industrial skills during their course of study.
3 Bridging the gap between theory and practical knowledge by providing a platform for
students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real life situations.
4 Enabling a smoother transition from school to the world of work by equipping students with
better contact for future work placement.
5 Introduce students to the real working atmosphere so that they will be aware of what they
would most likely meet after graduation.
Partaking in SIWES has become a prerequisite for the award of diploma or degree certificates in
many Nigerian Institutions according to the Nigerian government Educational policy.
Undergraduates of Science (Natural or Medical) and Technology are expected to take part in the
scheme for the duration of four months for polytechnic students, six months for university
students and one year for college of education students.

3.5 NETWORKING
Networking, also known as computer networking, is the practice of transporting and exchanging
data between nodes over a shared medium in an information system. Networking facilitates
everything from telephone calls to text messaging to streaming video to the internet of things
3.5.1 COMPUTER NETWORKING
A computer network is a set of computers sharing resources located on or provided by network
nodes. The computers use common communication protocols over digital interconnections to
communicate with each other
3.5.2 BENEFITS OF NETWORKING
1) Here are some of the biggest advantages of networking.
2) Strengthen business connections. Networking is about sharing, not taking.
3) Get fresh ideas.
4) Raise your profile.
5) Advance your career.
6) Get access to job opportunities.
7) Gain more knowledge.
8) Get career advice and support.
9) Build confidence.
3.6 CYBER SECURITY
Cyber security is the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems,
networks, programs, devices and data from cyber-attacks. It aims to reduce the risk of cyber-
attacks and protect against the unauthorized exploitation of systems, networks and technologies.
3.6.1 BENEFITS OF CYBER SECURITY
Protect networks and data from unauthorized access.

CHAPTER THREE
3.7 RNOC
My time at Huawei was spent in their Cyber security specialized department called RNOC.
RNOC is a branch of the cyber security department found on the third floor of the company. The
main purpose of RNOC was to handle all network security based on internet service providers
such as MTN, GLO, and AIRTEL. What this means that the branch would have to create a
secure networking connection for a client provider so as to keep it safe from all external attacks
such as cyber theft. The company RNOC was divided into four main divisions know as the
networking division, infrastructure division, the main division, and the auditing division.
18
CHAPTER FOUR
1. Checking to see if the sever had encountered any issues early in the morning.
2. Due to the number of staff in lumen Christi I asked to be placed on streaming of live
programs duty all throughout my work period with them
3. I helped in scheduling of programs for weekdays
4. I helped fix a printer that had an issue of taking in any paper
5. I helped a client who was having trouble logging into his VMI to help him log in by
restating their VM
6. I helped in updating the clients complaint list during the weekends
1. Distance: due to the distance from ajah (my home) to VI (work place) being very far
apart the time I would have to wake up for work would have to be really early in the
morning, just to beat the traffic and make it in time for work. In addition to that due to the
lack of safety on the Lagos expressway, I had to risk my life every time I would go for
work.
2. Expectations : even though this was my first actual working experience, I was expected
to already be aware and taught on some if not most of the preceding’s carried out at work
by my supervisor
3. Delays: This was a major challenge at the initial stage of my internship program because
I had to get a company to accept me to complete my SIWES with them. At different
points in time, I was given false hope in completing my internship with a company before
4. Sudden rejection. This eventually led to my internship period extending (encroaching) to
October.
5. Rejections: this was very mentally affecting problem which I had to face due to needing
to complete my SIWES program. I faced rejections from different companies due to not
having a particular quality they were looking for in an intern and that in turn made me to
doubt my skills as a computer scientist
19
CHAPTER FOUR
1. Distance: I was given the opportunity to come three times in a week. This was not
necessarily a solution to the distance problem, but it did decrease the amount of stress and
burn-out.
2. Expectations: To overcome this issue I would have to sturdy in my off hours to be able to
catch up with the preceding’s that I was places in charge of by my supervisor.
3. Delay: I was able to make up for the delay by extending me internship termination date.
4. Rejection: I was able to overcome this by being more confident in my own ability and I
was lucky to have people that care in my life. I was encouraged to keep trying, and
searching. Though it may seem like nothing, it was a huge help to me.

CHAPTER FIVE
CONCLUSION
In conclusion there were many things that I experienced and learnt during the six month of my
Industrial Training at both lumen Christi and Huawei. As a student majoring in computer science
I was very much involved with computer related work and task, most of my training time
focused on computer system repairs, maintenance and basic networking. The whole training
period was very interesting, instructive and challenging. Through this training I was able to gain
new insights and comprehensive understanding about the real industry working condition and
practice because it has afforded me the basic practical and theoretical knowledge that I would not
have gotten from a lecture room in the last three years in my institution. Going by the
experiences acquired during this program, SIWES can be said to be the best way to prepare
students to face the real working life after graduation.
RECOMMENDATION
Although SIWES did achieve quite a lot of its stated objectives, nevertheless, the following
recommendations are suggested to improve the qualitative context of the program:
22
iii. Sending students specifically to establishment where the stipulated aims and
objectives of SIWES would be achieved.
