Chapter 10

Torque is a vector quantity that represents the ability to cause rotation. It is calculated by taking the cross product of the force vector and the position vector of its line of action relative to the pivot. Torque depends on both the magnitude of the force and the distance between the line of action of the force and the pivot (the moment arm). The net torque on an object is the sum of all torques acting on it and determines whether and in what direction the object will rotate.
