Lecture 5 BJT Common Collector Amplifier and Common Base Amplifier

This document is a lecture on common collector (emitter follower) and common base amplifiers from an electronics and communications engineering course. It discusses the characteristics and AC analysis of each configuration. For the common collector amplifier, it defines the input and output impedances and shows that the voltage gain is approximately 1. For the common base amplifier, it notes the high voltage gain but current gain of less than 1, and defines the input and output impedances and voltage gain. Examples are provided to calculate characteristics for each configuration.

Common Collector Amplifier

❑ Note that
❑ the input signal 𝑽𝒊𝒏 is applied to the
base of the transistor, whereas the
output 𝑽𝒐𝒖𝒕 is taken from the Emitter
terminal

❑ the input current 𝑰𝒊𝒏 is not the base

current, but the source current.

❑ This circuit also called Emitter Follower

because the output voltage(𝑽𝒐𝒖𝒕 )
“follows” the input voltage (𝑽𝒊𝒏 )

❑ 𝑽𝒊𝒏 and 𝑽𝒐𝒖𝒕 are in phase & 𝐴𝑣 ≅ 1

There is no phase shift between input and output
