1. Purpose and Scope:


Objective:

The objective of this safe operating procedure (SOP) is to ensure the safety of personnel involved in
bricklaying and plastering work. This SOP outlines the steps to be followed to minimize the risk of
accidents and injuries during bricklaying and plastering activities.

3. Safe Work Procedure Checklist
A. Pre-Operation Task:

a. Conduct a thorough inspection of the area to identify any hazards such as uneven surfaces,
electrical outlets, or tripping hazards.

b. Ensure all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and worn by all
workers, including goggles, gloves, and respirators if needed.

c. Prepare the surface by cleaning it of any dust, dirt, or debris using appropriate cleaning
tools such as brooms or vacuum cleaners.

d. Cover floors and furniture with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from paint
spills or splatters.

e. Ensure proper ventilation in the area by opening windows or using exhaust fans to
minimize exposure to paint fumes.

f. Secure the area by cordoning it off or placing warning signs to prevent unauthorized access.

B. Paint Mixing and Preparation:

a. Select the appropriate type and color of paint for the project, ensuring it is suitable for the surface
being painted.

b. Follow manufacturer's instructions for mixing the paint, using the correct ratios of paint to thinner
or other additives if necessary.

c. Use proper equipment such as stirring sticks or mechanical mixers to ensure thorough mixing and
consistency of the paint.

d. Pour the mixed paint into suitable containers, ensuring they are tightly sealed to prevent spills or
contamination.

C. Operation Task:

Application of Paint:

a. Use appropriate painting tools such as brushes, rollers, or sprayers based on the size and type of
surface being painted.

b. Start painting from the top of the wall and work downwards to avoid drips and streaks.

c. Apply paint evenly and smoothly, avoiding excessive pressure which may cause splattering.

d. Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and maintain concentration on the task.

e. If working at heights, ensure proper scaffolding or ladders are used and secured according to safety
regulations.

f. Avoid overreaching while painting and reposition the ladder or scaffolding as necessary to maintain
stability and balance.

g. Keep work areas clean and organized, removing any paint cans or tools from walking paths to
prevent tripping hazards.

Post Operation:
Cleanup and Disposal:
a. Once painting is complete, clean all equipment thoroughly with appropriate solvents or cleaners as
per manufacturer's recommendations.

b. Dispose of used paint cans, brushes, and other materials in accordance with local regulations for
hazardous waste disposal.

c. Remove drop cloths or plastic sheeting carefully to avoid spreading paint or debris, and dispose of
them appropriately.

d. Clean the work area, including floors and any splattered surfaces, using soap and water or other
suitable cleaning agents.

e. Store leftover paint and materials in a designated area for future use, ensuring containers are
tightly sealed to prevent drying out or spills.

Final Checks:
a. Inspect the painted surface for any imperfections or missed spots, and touch up as necessary.

b. Ensure all equipment is properly stored and secured to prevent accidents or unauthorized use.

c. Remove any barriers or warning signs once the area is safe and accessible.

d. Conduct a debriefing session with workers to discuss any issues or concerns encountered during
the painting process and identify areas for improvement.

By following this Safe Operating Procedure, you can ensure that wall painting works are carried out
efficiently and safely, minimizing the risk of accidents or injuries to workers and bystanders.
