STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT Product Datasheet 08-Nov-2023

1 Introduction
STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT is a 3.01 MP IP69K camera from e-con Systems, a
company with over two decades of experience in designing, developing, and manufacturing
OEM cameras. This camera targets the NVIDIA® Jetson AGX Orin™ development kit, which
is full featured for visual computing and is supported by the NVIDIA® complete development
toolchain. It is interfaced with the NVIDIA® Jetson AGX Orin™ development kit using an e-
CAM_CUOAGX_DESER_8H01R1 deserializer board.

The 3.01 MP camera features an automotive-grade 1/2.42" ISX031 CMOS image sensor
from Sony®, which provides high dynamic range (HDR) imaging. Its LED flicker mitigation
(LFM) feature ensures stable and flicker-free imaging even under varying lighting conditions.

The STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT camera uses Analog Device’s Gigabit

Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) interface technology for a high-speed unified serial interface
to the camera. The serial interface uses a single coaxial cable to transmit high-speed video
data from the camera, bidirectional control data between the camera and a host controller,
and power from the host processor to the camera. This camera is interfaced with
MAX9296A, MAX9296B and MAX96712 GMSL2 deserializers IC from 'Analog Devices' and
is backward compatible with GMSL1 chips. The coaxial cable is connected to a camera
module enclosure through a FAKRA connector.

The camera module is enclosed in an IP69K rated aluminum enclosure, making it suitable for
various outdoor environmental applications such as autonomous vehicles, autonomous
agriculture vehicles, parking lot management and so on.

STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT Product Datasheet 08-Nov-2023

• Synchronous Mode

3.2.1 Asynchronous Mode

The asynchronous mode is the normal streaming mode. In this mode, all eight cameras can
be controlled individually.

The following table list the supported frame rates in asynchronous mode.

Resolution Frame Rate (Uncompressed UYVY)

1920 x 1536 30 fps, 60 fps
1920 x 1080 30 fps, 60 fps

Table 2: Maximum Frame Rates in Asynchronous Mode

Note: Kindly refer to STURDeCAM31_GMSL_Cable_Connection_Recommendation_Guide

document for the recommended cable connection and its supported FPS details.

3.2.2 Synchronous Mode

The synchronous mode is the special feature of e-CAM_CUOAGX_DESER_8H01R1 board. It
synchronizes all the frames of camera according to the provided PWM pulse as trigger. This
PWM trigger pulses can be provided internally (Internal Trigger Mode) or externally (External
Trigger Mode).

In Internal Trigger Mode, e-CAM_CUOAGX_DESER_8H01R1 contains on-board PWM

generator circuit to provide the necessary trigger signal for frame synchronization. The output
from each camera is frame synchronized. The overall tolerance for the generated PWM
signal frequency is 1%. e-con Systems presently supports 30 Hz PWM pulse in Internal
Trigger Mode. For customization of PWM frequency, please write to techsupport@e-
consystems.com.

The following table list the supported frame rates in internal trigger synchronous mode.

Resolution Frame Rate (Uncompressed UYVY)

1920 x 1536 30 fps
1920 x 1080 30 fps

Table 3: Maximum Frame Rates in Synchronous Mode

In External Trigger Mode, e-CAM_CUOAGX_DESER_8H01R1 board has an I/O Header

(CN12), through which you can provide PWM pulse of frequency less than 30 Hz to
synchronize all camera frames. The external trigger signal IO voltage is 1.8V. The internal or
external Trigger Mode selected through software.

3.3 Switches
The deserializer board has two switches to select the required mode for GMSL interface and
trigger.

5 Power over Coax (PoC) Cable

The STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT camera contains a camera module board along
with a ISX031 image sensor, a serializer board and a FAKRA connector board. The power for
the camera module board and the serializer board is supplied from the host controller side
through the PoC cable.

5.1 Power and Signal Flow in PoC

The STURDeCAM31 serializer and deserializer communicate using PoC technology. The
PoC channel is used for transmitting serialized video from serializer to deserializer (forward
channel) and a lower frequency control channel from deserializer to serializer (reverse/back
channel) along with DC power.

The camera module and serializer board are powered from Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
containing deserializer and processor. The filter on the ECU side is used to merge DC power
with the video and communication data, while the filter on the camera side is used to separate
the DC power from the video and communication data and powers its internal circuitry.

The following figure shows the power and signal flow in the PoC.

Figure 5: Typical PoC Power and Signal Flow

As a single coaxial cable transmits data with three different frequencies, a filter must be added
on both sides of the communication link. Ideally the POC filter must have low impedance for
DC signals and high impedance for back channel and forward channel signals. Hence,
inductors are used for the PoC low pass filter construction.

www.e-consystems.com | Subject to change without notice Page 11 of 23

STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT Product Datasheet 08-Nov-2023

e-con Systems recommends 12V as standard voltage for STURDeCAM31 POC line.

5.2 PoC Filter Design

The PoC filter must have high impedance at back and forward channel frequencies to filter the
DC power from the coaxial data. As 50Ω termination is used for data channels, a 20x increase
in impedance (1KΩ) is required to filter the high frequency content. Every inductor has parasitic
capacitance that causes self-resonance and a corresponding drop in impedance at high
frequencies. The inductors of different sizes are chosen to filter all the frequency bands of
interest.

The following figure shows the series of inductors which are used to filter the high
frequencies.

Figure 6: PoC Filter used in Deserializer Board

Figure 7: PoC Filter used in STURDeCAM31

As the PoC channel also contains required high frequency data, an AC coupling cap is
placed near the STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT serializer to extract the data (filtering
out DC).

STURDeCAM31_CUOAGX_CXLC_AT Product Datasheet 08-Nov-2023

5.3 PCB Layout Guidelines for PoC

The PCB layout guidelines for PoC are listed as follows:

• Route the coaxial trace to a FAKRA connector as a 50Ω single ended trace, with tight
impedance control. If the trace is not 50Ω and laid out cleanly, performance issues can
arise.

• Place the AC coupling capacitors close to the serializer/deserializer.

• Route high speed coaxial trace from the FAKRA connector with the most direct route and
minimum trace length as possible. On the path of this high-speed trace, the components
must be placed, to minimize the stub length seen by the transmission line.

• Ensure the coaxial trace can carry PoC current without temperature rise.

• Routing highest to lowest SRF inductor on the GMSL line is critical. Highest being
positioned directly on the GMSL RF line followed by the next highest and so on.

• Minimize the distance between IC, PoC, and connector.

• Cut out the ground on open coil inductors where the coil is exposed.

[email protected].

Table 10: Pin-outs of 120-pin Connector (CN1)

6.2.3 FAKRA Connectors (CN4 and CN5)

CN4 and CN5 connectors are Quad MATE-AX FAKRA II connectors. Each connector can
accommodate up to four camera modules. The center pin of the coaxial cable is used for the
transfer of power and bidirectional data. The shield is grounded.

6.2.4 12V DC Jack Connector (CN6)

The 12 V DC Jack connector is used to power up the deserializer board and the camera
module.
