28-51 BODTrak Firmware Replacement Procedure

This document provides instructions to replace the firmware in Hach BODTrak units shipped before March 2007 that have a bug causing erroneous data entry on February 28th of non-leap years after 2000. The procedure involves opening the unit, removing the existing firmware chip using a special tool, installing the replacement chip, and reassembling the unit. Care must be taken to properly handle the chips and reconnect all components.

Replacing BODTRak firmware with Feb 28 bug

Introduction
Hach BODTrak units shipped prior to March ’07 have a firmware bug that inserts an extraneous
day’s worth of data into the test record if a test was running at midnight of February 28th of a
non-leap year after 2000. The firmware supplied in this kit fixes this bug.

Procedure
Overview
In order to replace the firmware, the BODTrak unit must be opened and a socketed integrated
circuit (ic) chip on the main board replaced. Removing the ic containing the firmware requires a
special removal tool which is included with this kit.
It is important to follow the ic removal and replacement instructions carefully and completely to
avoid damaging the ic or the socket. If the ic socket is damaged, it will render the unit
inoperable and can not be field replaced.
Open the case
1. Disconnect the power cord at the unit and
remove any bottles attached at the ends of the
sampling tubes. Arrange the tubes so they
can be easily drawn into the case as required
after the cover is removed.
2. Lay the case upside-down on the counter and
remove the eight #6 machine screws holding
the bottom cover (see Figure 1).
3. Lift the front of the cover as shown in Figure
2 and disconnect the fan connector by
rocking the connector body slightly while
pulling it away from the circuit board. Once Figure 1: Bottom view of chassis with 8 cover screws
the fan cable is disconnected, move the cover removed.
back so that the main board is completely
exposed. The sampling tubes on the left (shown in Figure 3) may need to be pulled into
the case by several inches to allow clearance for the fan wire.

(shown unplugged in the figure) and remove

the 7 mounting screws and lock washers
holding the circuit board in the case. The
circuit board will move freely once all the
screws are removed.

5. Gently maneuver the circuit board so that its Cnctr
back edge is supported on the chassis ledge
as shown in Figure 4.
When moving the circuit board, be aware of
the channel selection switches on the
underside of the board. These switches are
tall and can be damaged if they bump too Figure 3: Main board exposed. Note location of 7

being moved.

6. Locate the larger of the two ic sockets
marked ‘U5’ containing the firmware ic on
the main board as shown in Figure 5.

Remove the ic
8. Locate the removal tool and insert the two
hooked ends into the two slots in the
diagonally opposite corners of the ic socket as
shown in Figure 6.
9. Continue to insert the removal tool until both
metal tines of the tool are touching the bottom
of the socket as shown in Figure 7. The
removal tool should now be perpendicular to
the ic socket with the thumb and forefinger
placed at the bends in the plastic handles as
shown in Figure 8. Figure 6: Inserting the removal tool

10. Keeping the insertion tool perpendicular to

the socket, gently squeeze the thumb and
forefinger together to lift the ic out of the
socket as shown in Figure 8.
11. Gently lift the removal tool away from the
socket to complete the removal of the ic as
shown in Figure 9.
12. Discard the ic.

Install the replacement ic

13. Locate the replacement ic shipped in a short length
of ic tube.
14. Before removing the ic from its tube, momentarily
touch the body of the pressure manifold located in
the lower right hand quadrant of the board (see
Figure 5) to discharge any static electricity from
your body.
15. Remove the replacement ic from its tube and locate
the reference dimple molded into the chamfered
edge of the ic as shown in Figure 10.
16. Carefully lay the replacement ic into the socket as
shown in Figure 11. The dimple in the ic must face
the white dot on the circuit board and all the pins of
the ic must engage their respective slots in the ic Figure 10: Replacement ic. Note reference dimple.
socket.
17. Using your thumb, gently press down on the ic (see
Figure 12) to seat it into the socket. The ic should
‘click’ into place in the socket with light to moderate
pressure.
Do not attempt to force the ic into the socket!
If the ic does not easily seat, verify that the ic is
rotated correctly (dimple facing white dot), lying Dimple faces

engaging their slots all around the edge of the socket.
When the ic is correctly seated in the socket, it will
be horizontal (not tilted) with its top surface flush
with the top of the socket as shown in Figure 13.

Attach and re-connect the main board

18. Being aware of the channel selection switches on the bottom of the circuit board,
carefully maneuver it back into its original position as shown in Figure 3. The RS-232
connector, which may have fallen underneath the circuit board must be on top of the
board, and the board must be maneuvered past the gray ribbon cable tied to the chassis.
At the end of this step the main board should be lying flush on the seven standoffs that
will be used to screw down the board, and positioned so that the screw holes are above
their respective standoffs.
19. Replace the seven #4 screws and lock washers in the positions shown in Figure 3. Ensure
that all seven screws are securely tightened.
20. Connect the plug on the end of the gray ribbon cable into the RS-232 connector. The
locating bump on the connector faces the edge of the board. When properly seated the
top of the plug must be parallel to the circuit board.
21. Slide the bottom cover forward and plug the fan
connector onto the pins near the front of the board
(see Figure 2 for location of the pins). It is
critically important that the fan connector be
correctly mated to the pins as shown in Figure
14 . Double check to be certain that there are no
bare pins showing on either side of the connector.
Replace the bottom cover
17. Lay the cover on the chassis as shown in
Figure 1 and re-install the 8 screws
removed in step 2.
