Topic.-The Army
1st paragraph: “Why the Army is not given the importance it really deserves in my
country”
The perception of the importance of the army can vary among different countries and within
different segments of society. In the case of Spain, perceptions of the army may be influenced
by historical, cultural, political and social factors that mean that it is not given the importance
that the army has. A recent example may be the regime of the dictator Franco, which may
have caused some Spaniards to have a stigma towards everything related to the military and
the defense of a country. I suppose you know who this person was. Don't you?. In
addition, citizens´ priorities in Spain, as in many other countries, have shifted to looking for a
better standard of living, like employment, quality of healthcare system, good education or
even Environmental quality, leaving military concerns behind.
Despite what I have said, as I see it, it is essential to recognize that the security and stability of
a nation depends to a large extent on the military. And it's not just about military personnel, but
also about investing in technology, equipment, and proper training to be prepared for any
threat that may arise since Spain is located at a strategic point that can make it a target for
foreign powers.
2nd paragraph: “It's not all about wars and fights”
The military is often associated with fighting and war. However, this view is overly simplistic.
The military has a much broader role in society, with functions that go beyond the battlefield.
What is your view about that?
On the one hand, the army provides many benefits to society, such as defending the country
against external threats. Besides that, it provides Humanitarian assistance in case of natural
disasters or humanitarian crises. Social and economic development with, for instance,
infrastructure construction and the promotion of science and technology is too important for a
country. Moreover, the most important thing for me, the military instills positive values in our
society such as discipline, teamwork, patriotism, and leadership. To my mind, These values
are essential for the formation of responsible citizens committed to the common good. Do you
think that's right?
On the other hand, we could find a few drawbacks, like the high cost to maintain it. In addition,
the Army can be used by governments to repress the civilian population. Furthermore, the
excessive militarization of society can generate a culture of violence and authoritarianism.
Have you ever thought about being a soldier? If you would like to be one and want to be
successful, I highly recommend that you follow some of these tips:
First of all, you have to be clear about your objectives. Decide if you want to achieve a specific
rank or specialize in a specific facet of the military. You will also need to take your training
seriously and put effort into each type of exercise, both physical and technical. Besides that, it
could be very positive if you can demonstrate your ability to lead by example, inspire others
and make good decisions under pressure. This would show that you are prepared to exercise
leadership. Furthermore, fostering positive relationships with colleagues, superiors, and
subordinates is an important part of your growth in the military.
Finally, if there is something that will make you grow in your military career, it is assimilating
the fundamental values of the military, such as integrity, honor, courage and selflessness.
These values should guide your actions on and off the service. Which of these values do
you think is the most important from your point of view?
4th paragraph: “What might the future of the army hold? (Breaking down gender roles
and the role of technology)”
Finally, I’m going to tell you what I think the future of the army might be, taking into account the
breakdown of gender roles and the increasing role of technology.
Regarding the integration of women in the army, we don't have to wait for the future, since
today I believe they are completely integrated. It is true that, although there are more men in
command positions, in my opinion, it is because there are far fewer women in general, in the
military. Do you know how many women are in the Spanish army? I have no doubt that
women may occupy a predominant position in the future, when the focus stops being on
physical strength and technology plays a fundamental role in warfare, as I believe is already
happening. This circumstance would open opportunities for people of all genders who excel in
areas such as cybersecurity, drone operation and data analysis, regardless of their gender.
It is important to note that the actual future of the military will depend on a complex interplay of
technological advances, social and cultural changes, and geopolitical realities. However,
understanding these potential trends can help us prepare for a future in which the military is
more diverse, technologically advanced, and faces new challenges and opportunities.
