Familiarization on Laboratory Equipment and Lab Safety Rules

and Regulations Abstract

In order to carry out experiments in a laboratory, it's important to have a thorough

comprehension of the equipment and instruments being used. Being proficient in handling lab
equipment can help save time that might otherwise be wasted during experiments. Additionally,
having knowledge of safety protocols is crucial when working in a laboratory. This involves
being able to handle hazardous chemicals safely, identifying any possible risks associated with
the experiment, and following the necessary safety procedures. One can conduct experiments
safely and efficiently in the laboratory by having a good understanding of the tools and safety
measures.

Objectives
1. To familiarize the participants with laboratory equipment and its functions.
2. To train the participants on the proper use of laboratory equipment to increase
efficiency and reduce time wastage.
3. To educate the participants on the safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe
working environment.
4. To provide hands-on training to the participants on how to handle hazardous
chemicals safely.
5. To equip the participants with the skills needed to identify potential risks
associated with experiments and the necessary safety procedures to adopt.
Enabling Assessment 2.1 – Relevant Laboratory Safety Rules and Regulations

Considering that you are working on a home-based laboratory course, what do you
think are the most important safety rules and regulations that you have to strictly
observe whenever you are performing your laboratory experiment/activity at home?
Write down at least 5 that will make you and your companions at home safe. Use the
space below.

 List a minimum of 5 safety measures to ensure personal safety and that of other
individuals while conducting experiments at home. To avoid damaging
equipment, always gather the necessary components and organize them
properly.

 When handling liquids, ensure that there is an unobstructed route to the sink or
bathroom in the event that a liquid is accidentally spilled on your body.

 Prior to commencing an experiment, always wear protective gear such as lab

coats, safety goggles, and gloves.

 To prevent accidents, do not tolerate or overlook any horseplay during an

experiment.

 To avoid wasting unused materials and equipment, only use the necessary
components for the experiment.
2.5 Familiarization of Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment

Name Sketch/Photo Function/Use

Overflow Can The overflow can is a measuring
tool that can be utilized to determine
the volume of an object that has an
irregular shape and also the density
of a substance. The device is
designed with a slanted spout and
has a capacity to hold up to 470
milliliters of liquid. It has a diameter
of 7.5 centimeters and a height of
12.5 centimeters.
Beaker A beaker is a type of object that has
a cylindrical shape, a level bottom,
and a small opening that can be
used to pour out its contents.
Beakers come in various sizes,
starting from a few milliliters to
several liters.

Graduated Cylinder The graduated cylinder is a

measuring device that is highly
accurate in determining the quantity
of liquids. It contains markers that
show the exact volume of the liquid
being measured, making it more
precise compared to laboratory
flasks and beakers.
Triple Beam Balance A tool that measures mass with
extreme precision is the triple beam
balance. Its reading error is 0.05
grams or less. Three beams make
up the gadget; they are referred to
as the middle beam, front beam,
and far beam depending on their
size. The distance beam may
measure in 10-gram increments, the
middle beam in 100-gram
increments, and the front beam can
measure from 0 to 10 grams. It can
be used to directly measure an
object's mass or to take the
difference to calculate a liquid's
mass.
Meter stick The meter stick is a measuring tool
used to measure length, utilizing the
metric unit of meters. It includes
prefixes such as kilo and centi to
help measure objects that are larger
or smaller in size than a sheet of
paper.
Weighing Scale A weighing scale is a device utilized
to determine an object's mass or
weight. It is available in different
sizes, with varying weighing
capacities, and is an essential
instrument used in laboratories,
commercial kitchens, and
pharmacies. Weighing scales can
be classified into two types:
mechanical and digital. The
mechanical version comprises of a
dial that rotates to display the weight
of the object being weighed.
Linear Expansion A linear expansion device is utilized
Apparatus for the purpose of finding out the
linear expansion coefficient of four
distinct materials, which are brass,
copper, iron, and aluminum.
Calorimeter A calorimeter is an apparatus that
can be employed to gauge the
amount of heat generated during
chemical reactions or other physical
alterations. It comprises a metallic
container filled with water, linked to
a thermometer situated above the
area where combustion takes place.
This tool is utilized to explore
thermodynamics, biochemistry, and
chemistry.
Thermometer A thermometer is an instrument that
detects temperature changes and
measures an object's temperature. It
consists of a temperature sensor
that expands or contracts in
response to temperature changes,
and a visual scale that displays the
numerical value of the temperature.

Steam Generator A steam generator is a machine that

produces high-pressure water vapor
for various purposes, such as
thermal expansion and physics and
chemistry experiments.

Electric Stove An electric stove is commonly used

in laboratories to dry lab supplies or
samples, but it should not be used
for cooking or food preparation.
Electroscope An electroscope is a tool used to
identify and compare electric
charges, while a multimeter is an
electronic measuring tool that can
measure resistance, current, and
voltage.

VOM or Multi tester Electrical resistors are components

of the electrical system that modify
signal levels, divide voltages, bias
active devices, and reduce current
flow.

Electrical Resistor A DC power source is used to power

circuits for testing, such as
breadboards or printed circuit
boards, by setting the desired
voltage or circuit level..

DC Power Supply An optical bench is a long steel pipe

with a linear scale used to measure
distances, investigate image
development, and hold light
sources, lenses, and displays.

Optics Bench with A launcher can be secured in place

Accessories on a flat surface with a binder clip,
while a tape measure is a small ruler
used to measure an object's length,
width, and height.

Binder Clips Projectile Motion A binder clip can hold the
launcher in place on a flat
surface, which can be used
instead of an all-purpose table
clamp. Binder clips are
commonly used to bind papers
or other objects together to
prevent them from scattering
around.

Tape Measure Projectile Motion A tape measure can be used to

determine an object's length,
width, and height, and can be
used in place of a meter stick.
It is a small ruler that can be
easily carried around.
