Science 5-Q3-SLM7

The document discusses light and how it interacts with different materials. It explains that refraction is when light bends as it passes from one material to another, like when a straw appears bent in a glass of water. Reflection is when light bounces off surfaces, like from mirrors. Some materials absorb light and do not reflect it, causing their surfaces to heat up. Other materials are opaque and block light, creating shadows of objects. The document uses the example of an aquarium made of transparent glass to show how materials can transmit light.

Self Learning Module 7
Materials That Can Block, Absorb or
Transmit Light
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science Grade Five Self Learning Module 7 on Identifying the
Materials That Can Block, Absorb or Transmit Light.

This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Science Grade Five Self Learning Module 7 on Identifying the
Materials That Can Block, Absorb or Transmit Light
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation - These are what you will be able to know after completing the
lessons in the module

Pretest - This will measure your prior knowledge and the concepts to be
mastered throughout the lesson.

Recap - This section will measure what learnings and skills that you
understand from the previous lesson.

Lesson - This section will discuss the topic for this module.

Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform.

Wrap Up - This section summarizes the concepts and applications of the

lessons.

Valuing - This part will check the integration of values in the learning
competency.

Posttest - This will measure how much you have learned from the entire
module.
EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the lesson the pupils are expected to:

1. identify the materials that can block, absorb or transmit light;
2. conduct experiment to identify materials that can block, absorb
or transmit light; and
3. show concern to people with poor vision by enumerating ways
on taking care of one’s eyes.

LESSON

Look at the picture. What can you say about it?

What kind of materials used in making aquarium? Why?
Can you see the fish inside the aquarium if is not made of glass?
The aquarium above is made up of clear glass for us to see the fish inside.

The light that is visible to the human eye and responsible for our sense of

sight is called visible light. Our primary source of light is sun.

The scientific study of light and how it interacts with different objects is called

optics. Optics is the study of refraction, reflection, absorption and transmission of

light.

Refraction refers to the bending of light as it passes from one transparent substance

into another. For example, the straw in a glass of water appears bent because of a

change in the material that interacts with the air while the part of the straw dipped

in water interacts with water. The speed of light is faster in air and slower in water.

This is why the straw looks bent.

Reflection refers to the bouncing back of light when it hits an object. Some objects

with flat surfaces like mirrors, reflect light in a straight, predictable way. Some

objects with uneven surfaces like rocks, reflect light in a scattered way.

Light that strikes opaque materials can be reflected or absorbed. Light is

reflected when it strikes on smooth and shiny surface like the mirror. It is also

reflected when it falls on the light colored and shiny materials. When light is

reflected, the materials do not increase in temperature and they do not become hot.

Absorption refers to a material’s taking in of light and not reflecting it back. For

example, when light strikes a black surface, it is absorbed by the surface and nothing

is reflected. Some materials do not transmit light. They do not allow the light to pass

through them. These materials are called opaque materials. When light falls on

opaque materials, light is blocked and cannot pass through the materials. The

blocking of light of opaque materials creates a black image of the object called
shadow. The shadow formed depends on the distance and the direction where the

light source came from. In the opaque materials, some light is transmitted but most

of the light waves are absorbed and then changed to heat.

Transmission refers to passing of light through some materials. For example, when

light passes through a glass window, it is transmitted to the other side, allowing the

light to pass through the window.

Transparent materials transmit light when they allow all the visible light

waves to pass through them. We can see the objects when light passes through a

transparent materials, falls of the object, and then reflects to our eyes
