Section 1.5: Some Simple Population Models
27. The number of bacteria in an experiment grows at a rate proportional to the
number present. If the doubling time of the culture (bacteria population) is 2
hours, how long will it take for the population to grow to a size 5 times the initial
size? (In other words, find α satisfying P (α) = 5P0 .)

28. The number of bacteria in an experiment grows at a rate proportional to the

number present. There were 200 bacteria 5 hours after the experiment had started.
At the end of the 6th hour the number of bacteria was 300.
a) Find the initial number of bacteria.
b) Find how many bacteria were present 10 hours after the experiment had
started.

29. A radioactive material has a half-life of 10 days. After 6 days, 10gr of this material
was left.
a) Find the original amount of this material.
b) Find how much was left after 8 hours.

30. An unknown amount of radioactive material was brought to a lab.

5 hours later, 50gr of it was left. And at the end of the 8th hour 40gr was left.
a) Find the original amount of this material.
b) Find the half-life of this material.
