Introduction

✓Discription of A&H institute of health management

introduction:
"Alliance and Humphrey (A&H) Institute of Health Management is a non-profit, non-
governmental organization located in the southwest region of Cameroon. It was
founded in 2022 by Mr. and Mrs. NGANDO, and offers programs in health care
management, medical laboratory science, nursing science, and midwifery. The
institution is led by a board of directors and has a staff of 20 lecturers,
including a dean, vice dean, and head of departments. The Institute has a goal of
providing high-quality education to its students and preparing them for a better
future

✓Discription of internship placement


- The Regional Hospital Limbe is a referral hospital in the southwest region of
Cameroon. It offers a range of services, including an outpatient department (OPD),
surgical unit, medical unit, eye unit, imaging unit, intensive care unit (ICU),
maternity, a laboratory, and a pharmacy. The hospital also has a mortuary, two
restaurants, doctor's quarters, and offices for various departments.
- The hospital is headed by a health director, who is supported by a general
supervisor, assistant

✓Objectives of Internship
Assigned to work in four units during my internship period

Surgical unit
Procedures carried out at the surgical unit✓

Daily cleaning and bed making

Patient teaching
Monitoring and chatting vital signs
✓At the surgical unit I improve in monitoring vital signs.the normal range of
vitals are
Bp=120/80mmhg
Pulse=60 to 100beats per minute for adults
Pulse for babies
Respiratory rate = 12 to 20 syco per minute
Temperature = 37 to 38°c
Spo2 = 93 to 100%
✓ At the surgical unit, i also observe and assisted in some drug administration,
wound cleaning and wound dressing, daily cleaning patient teaching and handing over
techniques. At the surgical unit I also learned that before dressing a wound we
should close all the doors and windows,turn off the fans to avoid bacteria from
reinfecting the wound.Moreso,I observe and assisted in pre and post operative Care.
✓ some common diagnosis at the surgical unit are
- Appendicitis
- Hernias
- Fractures
- Sports injuries
- Deformities
- Hernias
- Anemia
- Ulcers
✓ some common medication that I observe been administered at the surgical unit are:
- Dakin's solution - a type of antiseptic solution used to clean and disinfect
wounds.
- Bineocine - an antibiotic ointment used to treat skin infections.
- Biafin - an antibiotic ointment used to treat skin infections.
- L-mesitran - a honey-based ointment used to treat wounds and burns.
- Vaseline gauze - a dressing made of gauze and petroleum jelly used to protect
wounds and promote healing.
- Betadine - an antiseptic
Normal saline which is used to which is used to maintain hydration of a patient
Normal saline is also used to flush IV line when it blocked and also used for
dilution of some medication.
Ringers lactate still used for hydration
Perfalgan to bring down the body temperature.
✓ At the male and female medical unit,
I improve in vital signs monitoring and chatting,I also improve my communication
skills with patients and I observe and assisted in serving medication .
I also learned and observe that if you are to carryout any procedure on a patient
you should inform them before the time of the procedure.
✓ Some common medical condition treated in the male and female medical unit
Stoke or cerebrovascular accident: stroke is the interuption of the blood supply to
the brain
Diabetes: diabetes is when the body is unable to use glocuse properly
High blood pressure or hypertension:it is a condition in which the force of blood
again the Walls of the artery is to high.we have the systolic pressure which is
when the heart beats and diastolic pressure which is when the heart rest and beats.
Simple maleria: cause by plasmodium parasite
Abdominal pain: have many other causes depending on the diagnosis
✓We have two types of stroke
Ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage in an artery that supplies blood to the
brain. This blockage can be caused by a blood clot, narrowing of the artery, or a
blood vessel that bursts.
Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, which
leads to bleeding in the brain.and it's a very serious condition that can led the
death if not treated on time
Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity are all risk factors of
stroke
✓Out patient department (OPD)
OPD: A healthcare facility where patients receive treatment without being admitted
to the hospital. Services include consultations, diagnostic tests, and minor
procedures. Open during regular business hours.
Emergency unit: A healthcare facility that provides immediate treatment for life-
threatening illnesses or injuries. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
✓What I learned at the outpatient department
At the OPD,i observe and assisted in patient consultation, monitoring of patient
vital signs and sending them to the doctor office
Although working at the emergency unit was not part of my objective, i observe and
assisted with some emergency cases like drug administration, wound dressing, taking
of samples to the lab, also assisted with a burnt case at the emergency unit by
debriding the skin.
From all the four units I work in i achieved all my objectives with the guidance of
health practitioner's
At all this unit I encountered some difficulties
Difficulty in cutting plaster
Difficulty in aspirating
Communication problem with my patient
✓Solutions
I observe many times and finally assisted in cutting plaster.
I also had to observe many times and succeeded in aspirating.
I observed and added to my skills of communication with my patients.
✓ during my internship period at the regional hospital limbe I learned how to feed
an unconscious patient through a nasal gastric tube and I also assisted in giving
the unconscious patient medication and changing the patient position to avoid bed
sores
✓During my internship at regional hospital limbe learned about some common Lab test
request by the doctor examples are
FBS( fasting blood sugar)
FBC( full blood count)
MS(HIV test)
Simple maleria (to check if there's maleria parasite in the blood)
TB test (tuberculosis)
Stool culture
Urine analysis
✓Conclusion
My internship program was a success. This is because I achieved all my objectives
and gained new skills and knowledge. Thanks to the general staff at regional
hospital limbe, thanks to Mr and Mrs Ngando CEO of Alliance and Humphrey institute
of health management for granting me the opportunity for this internship and I also
thank the general staff of A& H institute of health management for always checking
up on us and the encouragement and finally thanks to God almighty for helping me
through my internship.
