A. ACTIVATION
Awareness
The teacher will ask the questions to the class.
o Can you still remember how to add or subtract fractions?
o How about adding dissimilar fractions ?
o How adding and subtracting similar and dissimilar fractions would differs?
o In adding or subtracting polynomials, what is the most important thing we should remember?
B. BUILDING – UP
Analysis
By doing the activity, can you tell the rules on adding and subtracting similar and dissimilar fractions?
(Recall what is a dissimilar fractions and similar fractions.)
Abstraction
Rules in Adding and subtracting a rational expression are the same as adding and subtracting a fraction.
A. Addition and subtraction of rational expressions with same denominators
If two rational expressions have the same denominators, the sum is defined as:
a c a+c a c a−c
+ = and the difference is − =
b b b b b b.
Note: In adding and subtracting rational expression, you must know how the operations in a polynomial
or algebraic expressions.
III. GIVING EXAMPLES
Let us apply the rules.
A. Addition and subtraction of rational expressions with same denominators
Example 1
5 3
Add: +
2x 2 x
Solution:
5 3 5+3
+ = Add the numerators and copy the common denominator.
2x 2 x 2x
8
=
2x
2• 2• 2
= Find the factors.
2• x
4
= Reduce to lowest term.
x
Example 2
x x+5
Add: +
x+2 x+2
Solution:
x x+5 x+ x +5
+ = Add the numerators and copy the denominator.
x+2 x+2 x+2
2 x +5
=
x +2
Example 3
Add and Simplify.
2x 8
2 + 2
x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4
Solution:
2x 8 2 x +8
2 + 2 = 2 Add the numerators
x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4
2(x+ 4)
= Factor the numerator and the denominator.
(10)¿
2
= Cancel out the common factors.
( x−1)
Example 4
Subtract and Simply.
8 2
−
x+7 x +7
Solution:
8 2 8−2
− = Subtract the numerators. Copy the common denominator.
x+7 x +7 x +7
6
= Express the difference in the simplest form.
(11)¿ ¿
Example 5
Subtract and simplify.
2
x 25
−
x+5 x +5
2 2
x 25 x −25
Solution: − = Subtract the numerators and copy the common

Example 6
Add and subtract the simplify.
2 2 2
( x −12) (3 x +2) (3 x −3 x )
+ −
(x −5) ( x −5) (x−5)
Solution:
2 2 2
( x −12) (3 x +2) (3 x −3 x )
+ −
(x −5) ( x −5) (x−5)
x2 −12+ ( 3 x 2 +2 ) −(3 x 2 +3 x)
= Enclose binomial numerators in parentheses ().
