TLP 13 Addition and Subtraction of Rational Expression

The document provides instructions on adding and subtracting rational expressions with the same denominator, noting that the process is similar to adding and subtracting fractions. It demonstrates this through examples such as adding (5/2x) + (3/2x) and subtracting (8/x+7) - (2/x+7). The examples illustrate combining like terms in the numerators and keeping the common denominator.

Method: Five A’s
TLP 13: Addition and Subtraction of Rational Expression
 Addition and Subtraction of Rational Expressions with same denominator
Objectives: Through the discussion and examples, the students will be able to:
1. Add and subtract rational expressions with the same denominator.

A. ACTIVATION
Awareness
The teacher will ask the questions to the class.
o Can you still remember how to add or subtract fractions?
o How about adding dissimilar fractions ?
o How adding and subtracting similar and dissimilar fractions would differs?
o In adding or subtracting polynomials, what is the most important thing we should remember?

To recall, let us answer the following.

Activity
Perform the indicated operations then simplify.
1 2 4 9 2
1. + = 1 ___________________ 2. + = __________________________
3 3 7 14
4 5 3
3. + = ___________________ 4. (5x+10) +(6x+15) =4 _______________________
11 11
4 2 5 49 37 6
5. − = ____________________ 6. − = __________________________
5 7 60 60
7.4a2 – 8a2 = 7 __________________ 8. ¿) (2x+5) = 8 _____________________

B. BUILDING – UP
Analysis
By doing the activity, can you tell the rules on adding and subtracting similar and dissimilar fractions?
(Recall what is a dissimilar fractions and similar fractions.)
Abstraction
Rules in Adding and subtracting a rational expression are the same as adding and subtracting a fraction.
A. Addition and subtraction of rational expressions with same denominators

If two rational expressions have the same denominators, the sum is defined as:
a c a+c a c a−c
+ = and the difference is − =
b b b b b b.

Note: In adding and subtracting rational expression, you must know how the operations in a polynomial
or algebraic expressions.
III. GIVING EXAMPLES
Let us apply the rules.
A. Addition and subtraction of rational expressions with same denominators
Example 1
5 3
Add: +
2x 2 x
Solution:
5 3 5+3
+ = Add the numerators and copy the common denominator.
2x 2 x 2x
8

2• 2• 2
= Find the factors.
2• x
4
= Reduce to lowest term.

Example 2
x x+5
Add: +
x+2 x+2
Solution:
x x+5 x+ x +5
+ = Add the numerators and copy the denominator.
x+2 x+2 x+2
2 x +5
=
x +2

Example 3
Add and Simplify.
2x 8
2 + 2
x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4
Solution:
2x 8 2 x +8
2 + 2 = 2 Add the numerators
x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4 x +3 x−4
2(x+ 4)
= Factor the numerator and the denominator.
(10)¿
2
= Cancel out the common factors.
( x−1)
