Chapter 1 - Applied Mechanics

This document discusses combined stresses from direct, bending, torsional and other loads. It provides examples of calculating principal stresses and directions in circular shafts under combined loads including axial force and torque. Methods for determining maximum bending moments and kern regions without tensile stress are also examined.

Combined Stress

Direct + Bending Stress

(a) Let C.S.= A

Direct Stress
Load P gives the moment about z axis

Bending stress

Total stress =

Maximum compressive stress will be at R.H.S

Maximum stress will be at

F.B.D

B.M vary from section to section

so we must Go for maximum stress
hence find Maximum B.M. and
then calculate the maximum stress
which will occur at the outer most
fibre.

Assignment
show that maximum B.M will occur at the load point

2. Bending & Torsion (shear) stress

Inclination of principle planes to z axi

Equivalent Bending moment

Similiarly equivalent Torque

Ex. Find the zone over which the vertical downward force P0 may be applied to the rectangle block
Without causing any tensile stress at the section AB.

P0 is load acting at ( y0
, Z0 )

1/29/13 Chapter 1:Applied Mechanics

It follows

Any vertical force acting on line CD will give the zero stress at A.
Similarly, other lines may be established for other corners as shown in fig.
Hence the force P0 may be applied within this region without causing tensile stress at any of the four
corners or any where else.
This region is called kern (corner) of the section.

This producers a circle of diameter d/4 with centre ‘o’ within which load must lie for No
tensile stress to develop at the outer periphery.

Stress Analysis in Torsion :- combined stress (Torsion + Direct loading)

Ex:- A uniform homogenous circular shaft is shown subjected .Simultaneously to an axial tensile
force P and twisting moment

Most convenient method of describing the combined state of

stresses is to use principal Stress components.

Principal Stress & direction

Stress Analysis in binding :- combined stresses

Ex. An elastic shaft is transmitting, simultaneously a bending moment Mb , an axial force P,and a twisting
moment Mt, We wish to study the state of combined stress.
