Let Us Study
Review on Transitional Devices

Moving on this part, you must complete the paragraphs below by

filling in the blanks with the appropriate transitions. Choose the transitions
from the box preceding each paragraph. Use a separate sheet of paper to
answer this activity.

You did good on your review on transitional devices. You have learned
the relevance of transitional devices that link sentences and paragraph
together.

Narration
“the most powerful words in English are, “Tell me a story.”. (Pat Conroy, My
Reading Life)

5
Narration, in its basest definition, is storytelling. It is a sequence of
events, not necessarily arranged in chronological order, told by a narrator,
happening in a particular place at a particular time.

An effective narrative is that which makes the reader think and

compel him/her to read the narrative again.

What did you write about the pictures given in your activity 1? That’s
great! You have shared a story based on the photo presented. Item number
1 shows that they are reading the newspaper together.

Telling a story and giving details of all the events in a story is what
narration is all about. It is like what you did in your activity, writing a story.
In this lesson, you will learn about writing narrative paragraph.

Effective Narrative Writing

To achieve this effectiveness, writers should make sure that their

narratives have a vivid description of details, a consistent point of view and
verb tense, and a well-defined point or significance.

Point of View

Description
“Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the
years you have lived.” (Helen Keller, deaf and blind American author and activist)

Wow! You are a fast learner. Yesterday you have learned about
writing narrative paragraph. let’s try another topic on writing descriptive
paragraph.
A descriptive paragraph is a focused and detail-rich account of a
specific topic. Paragraphs in this style often have a concrete focus—the
sound of a waterfall, the stench of a skunk's spray, but can also convey

6
something abstract, such as an emotion or a memory. Some descriptive
paragraphs do both.

Try this activity below on writing appropriate adjectives. I know

this would be easy for you.
Choose the appropriate adjective for the highlighted nouns in the
following sentences below. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Dangerous Amazing Dark Enchanted

Beautiful Brave Graceful Magical

Powerful Terrible Intimidating Graceful

Charming Glorious Horrible Fearless

1. The knight slayed the dragon.

2. A princess is trapped in the tower.

3. The wizard cast a spell

4. The unicorn galloped through the forest.

5. A fairy fly into the sky.

Wow! You did great on this activity, by providing the appropriate

adjective for the following’s nouns. In every language adjective are important
elements of sentences.
Without adjectives we could not say how any object looks like.
Adjectives are useful for giving description of something or somebody. Using
adjectives means that we can express the quality of any person or object.

Definition
“Every new concept first comes to the mind in a judgement (Charles Sanders Pierce)

Let me ask you these questions: When was the last time you
consulted a dictionary? Which word did you try to find? When you found the
meaning of the word in the dictionary, did you understand its definition?
Have you used the word both in writing and in speech? Do other people
understand the meaning of the word the same way you do?

7
I believe you have all the answers to these questions. However,
sometimes you might have encountered one of the most complicated
concepts to explain in words which is emotions. That is to say, happiness,
sadness, anger, nervousness, excitement and jealousy.

Understanding the meaning of a word can be tricky because language

is dynamic; language continuously changes. This is why defining is
essential. It enables us to better understand words, and in turn, makes
other people understand what we mean. Defining is trying to understand the
meaning of a word or an expression.

Exemplification and Classification

“I actually think that the most efficacious way of making a difference is to
lead by example and doing random acts of kindness is setting a very good
example of how to behave in the world.” (Misha Collins)

Exemplification and classification as a mode of paragraph

development is very useful in discussing complex topics by way of
enumerating or listing subtopics that are considered familiar to the target
readers.

Comparison and Contrast

“There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the
contrast.” (Charles Dickens)

You will learn about writing comparison and contrast paragraph.

When you are making a choice, whether trivial or serious, you are
doing some sort of a comparison and contrast.

Comparison entails, dealing with similarities or likeness of at least two

subjects. Contrast on the other hand, is talking the differences between or
among topics.

Compare and contrast Computers and Mobile Phones using Venn

Diagram. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Venn Diagram

Similarities Differences

8
Computers and Mobile Phones

Computers can be used to communicate easily, for instance via email.

Similarly, the mobile phone is convenient tool for communication. Both
computers and mobile phones can be used to communicate easily with other
people. Just like the computer, the mobile phone can be connected to the
internet.
Computers, although increasingly small, are not always easy to carry
from one place to another. However, the mobile phone can be carried with
ease. Computers are generally not very portable, whereas mobile phone is
very handy.

Notes from the Teacher

Were you able to compare and contrast computers from mobile
phones? It is easy right, especially when you are using the graphic
organizer that is the Venn diagram. The transitional devices will also
help you in recognizing the similarities and differences.

Cause and Effect

“if you prove the cause, you at once prove the effect, and conversely nothing can
exist without its cause”. (Aristotle, Rhetoric)

In writing composition, cause and effect is a method of paragraph or

essay that can be organized in various ways.

Determining cause and effect can be thought provoking. It is quite

complex because there are two types of causes, immediate causes or also
known as primary causes, which are readily apparent because they are
closest to the effect. The other one is ultimate causes or secondary causes,
which, being somewhat removed, are not so apparent and may perhaps even
be hidden. Cause is the reason as effect is the result.

Look at these compound sentences.

Ella forgot her umbrella, and as a result she got soaked in rain.

The signal phrase as a result is used to connect two simple sentences

to form a compound sentence. From this compound sentence, we can
identify the cause which is Ella forgot her umbrella and its effect which is
she got soaked in rain.

Mellissa got a perfect score on her test because he studied a lot.

9
The signal word because is used to connect two simple sentences.
Mellissa got a perfect score on her test and She studied a lot. From this
compound sentence the cause is she studied a lot and its result or effect is
Mellissa got a perfect score

Persuasion
“He who wants to persuade should put his trust not in the right argument, but in the
right word. The power of sound has always been greater than the power of sense.”
(Joseph Conrad)

Have you ever tried, when you watched a television commercial on shampoo,
and you find yourself buying that brand of shampoo the next day? Well, that’s
persuasion. Now, in writing persuasive paragraph, you would also be assertive and
forward in conveying your thoughts and ideas.

The use of persuasion as a pattern of paragraph development is based on

the assumption that all essays are essentially assertive and the writer always,
whether consciously or not, fights for something in his/ her paper.

Argumentation is the use of facts and logic to convince an audience while in

persuasion, there is an addition of emotional appeal or pathos.

The use of persuasion as a pattern of paragraph development

assumes that all essays are essentially assertive.

Below shows the 3 appeals of argument: Logic, Emotion and Credibility

Appeal to Logic Stick to the known facts

Appeal to Emotion Beg your way t
Appeal to Credibility Convince them to trust your honesty

Wow! You are amazing, I bet you already know the different patterns of
development in writing across discipline.
Now that we you are through reading and understanding your lesson, let’s
proceed and try to answer the following activities. Please take note of all the things
you have read in this module, so that it will help and guide you in answering all the
activities that follows.

Let Us Practice

Let Us Assess
Now that you are almost through with this module, Answer the
following items below. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper. For clarifications you wish to ask your teacher, send a message to
your subject teacher on your messenger group chats.
1. Define in your own words the following patterns of paragraph development.
A. Persuasion
B. Narration
C. Comparison and Contrast
D. Cause and Effect
E. Persuasion
F. Definition
2. Explain in 5 or more sentences why each pattern of paragraph development
is appropriate for the topic. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Pattern of Paragraph Topic

Development

Cause and Effect Heavy Traffic

Comparison and Contrast City Living and Provincial Living

Definition Education

Description Durian
Write A if you agree with the statement; otherwise write D if you disagree.
Whatever your answer is, explain your answer for each statement below.
Your explanation must be at least 5 or more sentences. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.
1. In an essay that uses cause and effect as its primary pattern of
paragraph development, it is possible to write solely about either the
cause or effects of a given situation
2. One should always have to have at least two topics or subjects to be able
to do comparison and contrast.
3. Opinions and anecdote should be avoided as support for claims as they
vary from person to person and unreliable.
4. The main purpose of exemplification, or of any pattern of paragraph
development, is to concretize and make more understandable complex
ideas, concept words, and expressions to your target readers.
5. The definition essay is the most effective pattern of paragraph
development when asked to make a concept paper.
6. In describing, the sense of sight is the most important among the five
senses because it is the most used.
7. Narrative devices should always be present in any narrative for it to be
effective.
8. To solve any issue problem, one must always identify first the root cause.

17
9. Specifically, in essay writing, comparison cannot be done alone nor
contrast as well because they are complementary to each other.
10. Shifting verb tense, on the other hand, is also fine as long as the reader
is able to follow the sequence of events.
11. Connotation and extended definition are optional in writing s definition
essay because people have different interpretations of words and
concepts that including them would only confuse readers.
12. Since a proposal is suggesting the possibility of solving a problem by
giving solutions, proposals are largely speculative by purpose.
13. It is necessary to a writer to use figurative language in doing comparison
and contrast to successfully communicate your ideas to the readers.
14. Argumentation and persuasion should always be used together for your
arguments to be maximally effective
15. A narrative essay is the most effective mode of paragraph development to
use when you want to write something about a significant event that
happened to you.
