Lesson 01 - Functions, Notation, Domain, Range 2022
Unit 1: Functions
Lesson 1: Functions, Domain, Range
A relation in which each x -value is linked to only one y -value. The Vertical Line Test is used to test whether a graph
is a function. The Vertical Line Test states that if a vertical line intersects the graph of a relation more than once, then
the relation is not a function.
o one-to-one relation: each x-value is linked to a different y-value (function? Yes / No)
o many-to-one relation: more than one x-value is linked to a single y-value (function? Yes / No)
o one-to-many relation: one x-value is linked to more than one y-value (function? Yes / No)
Example
Determine whether each of the following relations are functions.
a) (1, 5), (-2, 3), (4, 3), (1, 6)
b) c)
Note 3: Evaluating Functions
Example
If f ( x )=5−x−x 2, find:
a. f (5 ) b. f (−4 )
c. f (−x ) d. f ( x +2 )
Example
Find the domain and range of the following.
a. b.
c. d.
Note 6: Family of Functions
Linear Quadratic
2
y=ax +bx +c (3 points)
m >0 m <0
(3 points)
Quadratic Quadratic
y=k ( x−α )( x−β ) (2 roots)
(1 root)
c=k ´ α ´ β
c= kα 2
Quadratic Cubic
y=k ( x−α )2 + k (vertex) y=x 3
Cosine Tangent
y=cos q y=tan q
