Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Sometimes, dogs love the bone given to them so much that they bury it. But why do they invest so
much energy in burying their prized possessions? "The reason why a dog buries something is to save it for
later," said Teoti Anderson, a professional dog trainer. "When you don’t know when you’ll find your next meal,
it makes sense to hide leftovers.”
The act of burying bones is a type of "food caching," that is, storing available food supplies for the
purpose of later access. It's a common behaviour in many species of birds and mammals, including in the
canine ancestors of domestic dogs — grey wolves — which is where dogs inherited their burying instincts.
Most dogs today don't need to store food because they have owners to feed them, but that doesn't mean
their natural urge to hide things for later doesn't still exist.
Sometimes, the instinct to bury things has nothing to do with storing food. According to dog
behaviourist Cesar Millan, burying can be a dog's way of savouring objects that he or she cherishes, so they
can be enjoyed again later. It can also be a way to relieve stress or other negative emotions, especially for
anxious dogs. Meanwhile, some breeds, such as terriers, simply tend to dig more than others, whether to
bury food or to burrow holes for no specific reason at all. "Dogs specifically bred to hunt or chase critters into
their dens often like to bury toys, bones and treats," Anderson said.
Besides bones, what types of things do dogs like to bury? There is a wide variety, according to
Anderson. "I once knew a dog who would bury rocks. I have no idea why these rocks were so special, but they
were special to him."

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

During the rainy seasons, the streets of Lagos, Nigeria can become almost impassable. They are often
flooded, and after a downpour, rubbish piles up in open gutters and makes moving around the streets
difficult. The city is also particularly vulnerable to water from another source: rising seas. If global warming
exceeds 2C, the city is predicted to see 90cm of sea level rise by 2100. So how is Africa’s most populous city
adapting?

The Makoko neighbourhood, known as the “Venice of Africa”, is one part of Lagos that has extensive
experience of dealing with high water. It has little access to electricity or clean sanitation, but has also been
home to innovations like the Makoko Floating School, a structure resting on recycled empty plastic barrels to
stay afloat on the water. The school's pyramid structure helped lower its centre of gravity and so increase its
stability, while also providing an ideal roof shape for shedding heavy rains. This prototype was short-lived
after suffering lasting damage from a storm in 2016. But it set the precedent for floating system that its
architect, Kunlé Adeyemi, would put to use in other coastal cities around the globe.
Water traffic is also developing quickly in these circumstances. In Lagos, the speed of travel possible
on a ferry far outstrips that of the slow-moving traffic on Lagos' roads. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, general
manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, there are now more than 42 ferry routes on the waterways
spanning across three districts. Besides the city authorities, an increasing number of firms are setting up water
transport businesses in the city. In 2019, Uber set sail with the test run of its Uber Boat service with
the aim to ease the city's infamous road congestion. Little data exists to help us determine whether taking a
boat or ferry is a greener than travelling by road, but according to estimates by the UK's Department for
Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, a foot-passenger ferry has lower carbon emissions per passenger
than a bus, coach or taxi.
One other vital defence is flood forecasting. Nigeria's federal authorities have designed the Flood
Mobile App to make predictions that could buy coastal regions the time to make adequate preparations to
protect cities like Lagos. The app is available online and provides real-time flood forecasting information
about a specific location, using data collected by the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA). NIHSA is
confident that the new Flood Mobile App will help people monitor daily flooding risks anywhere in Nigeria.
Already, some early signals urging people to be on alert have started playing out, as torrential rains flood the
roads in business and residential districts.
Without changes like these and many others, sea level rise this century would displace millions in
Lagos. But by learning to live on the sea and its waterways and knowing when flooding is most likely, Africa's
largest city is utilizing its ingenuity to prevent itself from sinking.
