TEST 1 (Module 1)

Reading

C Directions: Read the text below. Then read the questions that follow it and circle
the letter of the correct answer (A, B, C or D).

The House of the Future

By the end of this century, the houses that we will be living in will be nothing like today’s
traditional homes. Architects will have designed houses that are more eco-friendly and can
deal with environmental disasters such as earthquakes or floods.
Some houses will be able to be moved easily from one location to another. These will be
made of light, yet very strong materials. Buyers will be able to choose from many design
options, from a simple cottage to a magnificent castle. All the houses will include the latest
technology to give free heat and electricity. These houses will be cheap enough for
everyone and will help reduce overcrowding in large cities.
Other homes of the future will replace many of the buildings we are using today. When
skyscrapers were first built, they were considered the ideal way of housing many people in
a very small space. However, they were not built to survive the extreme weather conditions
that will threaten our planet in the future. Instead of building up, architects will build down.
There will be entire communities living safely in new towns and villages, built underneath
the old ones.

TEST 1 (Module 1)

D Directions: Read the text below. Then read the statements that follow it and
mark them as T (True), F (False) or NI (No information in the text).

Freecycle

Freecycle is not a new form of cycling. It is, in fact, an environmentally-friendly way of

shopping. Freecycle matches people who have undamaged items they no longer want, with
people who could use them. Any item can be advertised on the website, provided it is
offered completely free of charge.
In 2003, the founder of the first Freecycle group was working for a recycling company. He
realised that there was nothing wrong with a lot of the objects that were being destroyed.
So he set up the first Freecycle group to find charities and organisations that might need
their help. In less than ten years, there are now Freecycle groups in 85 countries, including
Bulgaria, with millions of members.
The two main aims of the Freecycle scheme are to reduce waste and to build community
spirit. Worldwide, the neighbourhood groups have saved thousands of items from being
thrown away and at the same time helped to protect the environment. Members can show
that they care about our planet and at the same time, save themselves money on
everything from computer games to cookers.
Although Freecycle will never replace traditional shopping, it is proving popular with people
from all walks of life, who consider it a modern, more responsible way to shop. Freecycle
describes itself as, ‘changing the world one gift at a time.’

23 Freecycle helps people to contact each other. .........

24 There is a small fee payable on each item. .........
25 The founder was concerned about unnecessary waste. .........
26 Freecycle was started by the owner of a recycling company. .........
27 There are now many Freecycle organisations in Bulgaria. .........
28 Freecycle hopes to improve neighbourhood relationships. .........
29 Freecycle members do not have a lot of money. .........
