Project Report

Members Maryam Tanveer and Faiza Hamid are working on a project to implement an active power factor correction rectifier for a 400W load. The project involves designing a circuit using components like a bridge rectifier, PFC controller IC, inductor, capacitors, MOSFETs and diodes to correct the power factor while rectifying AC to DC. It also includes developing a microcontroller firmware and monitoring software. Currently, the members are in the research phase to understand power factor correction applications since this is a new topic for them.

Project Title:
Power Factor Correction Rectifier(400W).
Project Scope:
The scope is to implement an active power factor correction (PFC)
rectifier to enhance power efficiency and meet power quality
standards for a 400W load.

Hardware Components:
 Bridge Rectifier: Converts AC voltage to DC voltage.
 Power Factor Correction (PFC) Controller IC: Controls the PFC
stage to improve power factor.
 Inductor (PFC Choke): Used in the PFC stage to smooth the
input current waveform.
 Capacitors: Used for energy storage and filtering in both the PFC
and rectifier stages.
 Power MOSFETs: Switching elements used in the PFC boost
converter.
 Diodes: Used for rectification and freewheeling in the PFC and
rectifier stages.
 Heat Sink (optional): Provides thermal management for power
devices such as MOSFETs.
 Voltage Regulator IC: Regulates the output voltage to the
desired level.
 Resistors: Used for current sensing, feedback, and voltage
division.
 Transformer: Steps down the AC input voltage to a suitable level
for the rectifier stage.
 Connectors: Used for input and output connections.
Software Side:
● Microcontroller firmware for PFC control
● Monitoring and control software interface
● Communication protocol for data exchange

Project Flow:
Initialization:
● The PFC rectifier system initializes, and the control algorithm
begins execution.
Sensing:
● Current and voltage sensors monitor the input waveform
characteristics.
Control Algorithm Execution:
● The microcontroller processes sensor data and dynamically adjusts
the switching of the rectifier to correct the power factor.
Rectification and Filtering:
● Power stage components rectify the AC input to DC and filter the

output to reduce harmonic distortions.

Load Testing:
●The system is tested with a 400W load to ensure it meets performance
requirements.
Monitoring and Optimization:
● Continuous monitoring and adjustment by the control algorithm to
optimize power factor under varying load conditions.
Output Power Delivery:
● The rectified and corrected power is delivered to the load with improved
efficiency.

Current Progress:
Since there was no previous understanding or concept of this kind of
application and implementation of said project, the first step we have taken is doing
the research of this project.
About Project:

A 400W Power Factor Correction (PFC) Rectifier is a specialized electronic

device used to increase the power factor and hence the efficiency of electrical
systems. The power factor in electrical systems is a measure of how well power
is utilized; a perfect power factor is 1. When it comes to maximizing energy use
and minimizing inefficiencies, power factor correction is especially important.
The primary function of this 400W PFC rectifier is to actively correct the power
factor while rectifying alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). A PFC
controller, power stage parts (diodes, capacitors, inductors, and switches), and
sensors to track input voltage and current are among its constituents.

Implementing a PFC control algorithm, which dynamically modifies the rectifier's

operation to increase the power factor, is the software portion of the project. If
external control or monitoring is needed, the algorithm functions in tandem with
communication protocols.

Initialization, sensing, algorithm execution, rectification, filtering, load testing,

continuous monitoring, and output power delivery are all included in the project
flow. The objective is to guarantee that the electrical system runs with an
enhanced power factor by providing a steady and effective rectified power output
under a range of load circumstances.
