Noise Risk Assessment

A noise risk assessment identifies sources that expose employees to high noise levels. It aims to ensure safe working conditions without affecting employee health. Factors like communicating over loud machinery or tools over long periods determine if an assessment is needed. The assessment follows a hierarchy of controls to eliminate, substitute, or reduce noise through engineering and administrative controls.

NOISE RISK ASSESSMENT

What is a Noise Risk Assessment?

Noise Risk Assessment is a tool that helps an organization to identify sources/areas where employees
are exposed to high noise level.

Aim of a Noise Risk Assessment.

The purpose of conducting a Noise Risk Assessment in an organization is to ensure a better and safe
working conditions without affecting the Health and Wellness of employees.

What factors determine the need for a Noise Risk Assessment?

Noise is a factor that cannot be eliminated in a place of work and is very much present in our day to day
life. However, there is a threshold that need to be respected so as to eliminate the risk of Noise Induced
Hearing Loss in the workplace.

Several aspects need to be taken into consideration to determine whether there is a need for a Noise
Risk Assessment. For instance:

 When employees have to communicate at a higher pitch over a distance of 1 meter.

 When dealing with noisy power tools over a long period of time.
 Legal compliances.

Steps in identifying Noise Risks.

Noise cannot be totally removed from a workplace, but can be controlled. However, the control
measures vary from organization to organization depending on the nature of work.

Elimination
The first and most effective control measure as per the Hierarchy of control is the Elimination process,
whereby the source of Noise is eliminated at source in order to eradicate the risk.

Substitution
Substitution is a process of replacing a power tool/machinery by a next best alternative that is much
quieter and also meet the demand of the task to be performed.

Engineering Controls
The engineering control involves changing the whole process, machinery or equipment to reduce
exposure level of employees to Noise. For example, separating a noisy machine in a separate room that
is surrounded by sound absorbent materials.

Administrative Controls
Administrative Controls consist mostly of restructuring or re-organizing of how the job is carried out to
reduce exposure time or number of workers exposed. This would include:

 Providing trainings and information on the proper

 Giving rest intervals between working hours.
 Restricting access to unauthorized individuals
