Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces.
Types of forging
Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed: “cold” and“hot”
forging.
- Cold forging: is most commonly used to make small metal items like screws and nails ( the biggest
advantage of this method is mass production )
- Hot forging: the raw material of metal is heated to very high temperatures and then shaped. There are
many types of hot forging:
+ Drop forging: in drop forging, a heavy drop hammer is rasied and dropped on the work piece to
deform it into the required shape. There are two types of drop forging: open-die forging: flywheel rings,
discs, step shafts,… and closed-die forging: drilling bits, small gear,…
+ Press forging: is a method of forging that involves the slow and continuous application or pressure on
the workpices.
