Accomplishment Report

The document summarizes the Gulayan sa Paaralan (Vegetable Garden in School) program at Candanum Elementary School in Isabela, Philippines. The objectives of the program were to promote vegetable production on campus, establish gardens as a food source, and teach students values of gardening, nutrition, and caring for others. Students from kindergarten to 6th grade each maintained their own potted vegetable gardens. Harvests supplemented school meals and were given to less fortunate students. Gulayan sa Paaralan Narrative Report

Introduction
Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) is one of the programs under the National
Greening Program of the Department of Education. The GPP is one of the mechanisms the
government implemented to promote and raise awareness to address food insecurity in the
country. Food insecurity is the state where people lack regular access to enough safe and
nutritious food for normal growth and development and active and healthy life.
Aside from implementing school gardening for the purpose of feeding programs is
inculcating among our learners the values of good health and nutrition, industry and love of
labor and caring for others. Furthermore, this will teach them how to improve their nutritional
status, learning where food comes from, and how planting promotes beautification of their
surroundings. It also serves as good stimulating activity in which they learn leadership and
rendering good service.
School gardening also gives benefit to barangay community. It introduces to the
community small scale food production which will somehow elevate their perspective about
food security ,health awareness and income generating projects.
Objectives:
Pursuant to DepEd Memorandum 095 s. 2018 on “Sustaining the Implementation of
the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program in Public and Secondary Schools Nationwide”, the
Candanum Elementary School initiated a “Vegetable Garden in Pots” which aimed to:
a. To promote vegetable production in the school campus.
b.To establish and maintain gardens as ready food source of vegetables in sustaining
supplementary feeding.
c. To include among the learners the values of gardening, good health and nutrition,
love of labor and caring for others.

Highlights
The Kindergarten to 6th-grade students had designated areas for planting and
propagating their vegetables. Each section had the freedom to choose the vegetables they
wanted to plant in their pots, plastic bottles, and wheels. The Kindergarten students planted
string beans and squash, while students from Grade 1 to 4 chose to plant eggplants, okra,
tomatoes, pechay, papaya, and bell pepper. Students in Grades 5 and 6 decided to grow bell
peppers, malunggay, ampalaya, and kangkong.
Every student was responsible for maintaining their own pot. If a student's plant died
or did not survive, they were required to replace it with the same kind of plant. To prepare the
school garden pots, the students cleaned and prepared the soil by mixing black soil and
organic fertilizers, such as animal manure. They also prepared vegetable seeds in the seedling
box. After a few weeks, the seeds grew into healthy seedlings and were ready to be planted.
Once the vegetables were ready for harvest, they were given to less fortunate students
and used to supplement the meals of our pupils.

Best Practices:

While performing these tasks, the Bayanihan System is still being practiced. The GPP
team and the rest of the faculty support each other by organizing supplemental feeding
programs for children who are wasted or severely wasted. Additionally, we cultivate
vegetables using the container gardening technique, utilizing repurposed bottles, pails, and
wheels.

Issues and Concerns

Due to the drought and lack of water supply, some seedlings and vegetables in the
garden were destroyed. Therefore, the replacement of plants is strongly encouraged.
Additionally, the limited space available for planting vegetables poses a challenge.

Recommendation:
PTA officers and parents from the 4 Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) are
encouraged to assist in maintaining the said program. It is crucial for stakeholders and the
school to collaborate closely to ensure the success of our program and the overall
improvement of the school.

Conclusion
No matter how ample the space may be, "gulayan sa paaralan" (school gardens) must
be implemented in every school. We should strive to enhance and boost vegetable production
in schools by instructing students on sustainable food production techniques that can be
applied in their homes and are crucial for honing their agricultural skills. Let's utilize school
gardens to enrich children's education through supplemental feeding programs. Moreover,
let's make our school a shining example of cleanliness and environmental responsibility
within our neighborhood.
