Highlights
The Kindergarten to 6th-grade students had designated areas for planting and
propagating their vegetables. Each section had the freedom to choose the vegetables they
wanted to plant in their pots, plastic bottles, and wheels. The Kindergarten students planted
string beans and squash, while students from Grade 1 to 4 chose to plant eggplants, okra,
tomatoes, pechay, papaya, and bell pepper. Students in Grades 5 and 6 decided to grow bell
peppers, malunggay, ampalaya, and kangkong.
Every student was responsible for maintaining their own pot. If a student's plant died
or did not survive, they were required to replace it with the same kind of plant. To prepare the
school garden pots, the students cleaned and prepared the soil by mixing black soil and
organic fertilizers, such as animal manure. They also prepared vegetable seeds in the seedling
box. After a few weeks, the seeds grew into healthy seedlings and were ready to be planted.
Once the vegetables were ready for harvest, they were given to less fortunate students
and used to supplement the meals of our pupils.
While performing these tasks, the Bayanihan System is still being practiced. The GPP
team and the rest of the faculty support each other by organizing supplemental feeding
programs for children who are wasted or severely wasted. Additionally, we cultivate
vegetables using the container gardening technique, utilizing repurposed bottles, pails, and
wheels.
Due to the drought and lack of water supply, some seedlings and vegetables in the
garden were destroyed. Therefore, the replacement of plants is strongly encouraged.
Additionally, the limited space available for planting vegetables poses a challenge.
Recommendation:
PTA officers and parents from the 4 Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) are
encouraged to assist in maintaining the said program. It is crucial for stakeholders and the
school to collaborate closely to ensure the success of our program and the overall
improvement of the school.
Conclusion
No matter how ample the space may be, "gulayan sa paaralan" (school gardens) must
be implemented in every school. We should strive to enhance and boost vegetable production
in schools by instructing students on sustainable food production techniques that can be
applied in their homes and are crucial for honing their agricultural skills. Let's utilize school
gardens to enrich children's education through supplemental feeding programs. Moreover,
let's make our school a shining example of cleanliness and environmental responsibility
within our neighborhood.
