SPH3U 1-4I - Advanced Kinematics Problems Assignment Updated

1. This document contains an assignment on advanced kinematics problems. It consists of 5 questions testing students' knowledge, thinking, application, and communication skills related to motion graphs, acceleration, distance, speed, and time calculations. 2. Question 2 asks students to calculate how many days it will take a spider climbing a wall to reach the top, given its daily upward and nightly downward movements. 3. Question 5 involves several sub-questions calculating the acceleration, distance traveled, time, and speed needed for rockets to reach the moon and other celestial bodies. It also asks students to determine if a second rocket could meet the first on the moon.

solutions.
➢ Use graph paper to draw graphs and include in the assignment.
➢ Round all answers to correct number of significant digits.

Knowledge (6 marks)

1. The graphs below show the velocities of two different students running at a track and
field meet. You will need no calculations for this question, only the graphs. However, be
sure to show your work!

2. A spider is climbing up a 3.00 m vertical wall. Starting from the bottom it climbs up 50.0
cm during the day and slips down 30.0cm at night. In how many days will the spider be
able to reach the top of the wall? 3 mark

3. Cesar Millan is returning home with his dog Rue at a speed of 2.0km/h. Rue is a well
trained dog and Cesar allows him to be unleashed when they are 3.0km from the house.
Rue happily begins running back and forth between the house and his master with a
constant speed of 3.0km/h. Rue does not waste any time while turning around. By the
time Cesar Millan reaches home, how many kilometers has Rue run? 3 marks

4. Mr. Jensen marked the road on his house at different positions and used a stopwatch to
record the data of fast cars driving in the neighbourhood. He collected the following data
of a Lamborghini and is curious about the cars’ velocities.

Distance (m) 5.0 9.0 13.0 16.8 20.0 22.8 25.0 26.8 28.0 28.8 29.0 29.0

a. Plot a position-time graph of the motion of the Lamborghini. Identify the uniform
motion segments of your graph. 3 marks, C
Marking Scheme
• Labeled graph 2 marks
• Uniform motion segment 1 mark
