A. CONNECT (Duration: 3 minutes)

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word L E A D E R ?

B. COACH (40 mins)

DO (Duration: 20 min)

Did you ever lead an activity or an undertaking in school, within your family or in your community?
What was the experience like?
No, i still haven't had quite an experience with being a leader since i always think that i'm not qualified
to be one.

Did you think you were a good leader? Why do you say so?
No. I am still not quite sure that i am a good leader since i still doubt myself and the things that i can do.

How can you be a better leader?

I can be a better leader if i have confidence in myself and in my abilities in terms of making decisions and
actions enough to ensure that others will follow me.
1
THINK (Duration: 20 min)

Leadership is the potential to influence others towards the realization of a goal. If you are able to get
others in the team to work with you to achieve an objective, then you have led. The objective may be as
simple as the submission of a group project.

A good leader wears many hats as you can see

in the diagram to the left. Most times, a
leader executes and makes things happen.
S/he or is able to
do this by careful planning. S/he is also a
teacher and does some mentoring and
coaching to his/her followers. Sometimes,
s/he is an innovator, capable of influencing
how things are done, or a steward as s/he
serves others.

To be a good and effective leader, some traits

are particularly helpful. It helps if the leader
looks pleasant, is intelligent, has vision, can
communicate well, is confident, is decisive,
and has a sense of responsibility.

Maybe not all of us are born having ALL

these traits. BUT, we can work on ourselves
to develop them. :) We can all aspire to be a
good leader, capable of leading people in the
workplace (or our communities) one day.

Look at the list of leadership traits in the previous page and THINK. :)

How else can I look pleasant physically? How else can I manage my health and well-being so that others
see me as ready to lead? This does not mean that we have to wear expensive clothes. Most times, it
means that we just need to look neat and put together.

How can I be more confident? Did you ever do something (an assignment or a task) when you felt
unsure how to do it? Sometimes, we are thrown into situations when we do not have all the
information. And because we are tasked to lead, we carry on and do the task anyway. Sometimes, all it
takes is for someone to believe in us.

Think of a time when you showed that you were responsible. This just means being accountable to
teachers, your parents, or a person in authority. Leaders need to have a sense of responsibility and own
up to their successes, failures, and learnings.

Now, try to finish these statements:

I will try to lead by _ influencing others to work with me to achieve a certain goal. _As a leader,

it is important for me to be wise in making decisions and actions, to be a mentor and innovator as ___

I find the following inspirational among the leaders I admire. _ As a good leader, it is also important to

be responsible and more confident, and lastly ___ I would like to continue to develop the following

leadership traits: __ Confidence, Critical thinking skills, Focus, Positivity, Creativity, and many more.

C. CHECK (10 min)
