Density Pot

This document outlines the annual calibration procedure for density pots in a laboratory. It involves visually inspecting the pot before each use and checking it annually against reference equipment. The procedure checks the theoretical volume of the pot by filling it with water, weighing it, calculating the volume based on the weights, and ensuring the measurement is accurate to 0.1% of the theoretical volume. Safety equipment like glasses and gloves are required.

Density pots will be checked annually and a visual check performed before each use.

1. From the equipment register establish what theoretical volume the density pot has been
allocated and record on worksheet.

2. Place the density pot and glass plate on the balance and record the weight to the balances
accuracy but at least to the nearest 1g.

3. Remove the density pot and glass plate from the balance and fill the density pot with water at
20 ± 2°c. Record the water temperature on the worksheet.

4. Once the water level is at the top of the pot slowly slide the glass plate on ensuring that all
trapped air is expelled. If any air is trapped during the process, remove the plate and slide on
again.

5. Wipe the exterior of the pot and glass plate of excess water and carefully place on the balance
and weigh. Record this value on the worksheet.

6. Determination of the net mass of water shall be to 0.1% accuracy of the theoretical volume.
For example, a 5 litre density pot should be weighed to an accuracy of at least 5g.

7. To calculate the volume the formula is:

Weight of Pot, Glass Plate & Water – Weight of Pot & Glass Plate = Volume
998

8. Forms for use are appended. Each form identifies the type, serial number, location, specified
accuracy and the record of measurements of the calibration.
