 The only way to learn collocations is to collect them and keep practising

them, but there are just a few points that can help you decide which verb to
use.

A. Things we make
 make is often used when something is produced by you, using your skills, your
mind or your words.
a mistake / a meal / money (U) / friends / a decision / noise (U) / progress (U) /
dinner / a guess / a comment / an excuse / a promise / a suggestion / a model
- It's not easy to make friends in a new place.
- She made a few mistakes in the exam.

B. Things we do
 do is often used for tasks and duties that you have to do and that are not
creative, or in expressions
homework (U) / the housework (U) / the shopping (U) / the cleaning (U) / sport /
a painting / research (U) / (someone) a favour / something / anything / nothing /
wrong / a job / your own way
- I forgot to do my math homework last night.
- Could you do me a favour and pick up a newspaper on your way home?
- I didn't do anything last night.
- Oh, those teenagers are so lazy, they do nothing all day long!

C. Things we have
food and drink / a meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) / a look / a party / a baby (= be
pregnant or give birth) / a nice, good, great, terrible time / a fight / an argument
- I had (=ate) steak, but Paula just had (=drank) a cup of coffee.
- I had an argument with my parents.
- We had a great time together.

D. Things we take
subjects (=study subjects) / a course / an exam / a photo / a picture / a bus / a
train / a plane / a taxi / a nap (=a short sleep) / a bath / a shower
- Did you take English in high school?
- I'm going to take four exams next month.
- I always take a shower in the morning.

E. Things we give
 give is used in many expressions connected with words. It is also used in
expressions that describe physical actions.
advice (U) / someone your word / a reason / a lecture / evidence (U) / somebody
a kick, a push, a slap, a kiss, a hug
- He gave us a very interesting lecture on the industrial revolution.
- Give me a hug!

 be + adjective in the following expressions:


- She was lucky. / I am hungry / I'm thirsty.
