RAPUNZEL

Long ago there lived a very loving couple. They were sad because they had
no children. Just behind their cottage was a witch’s garden. The wife looked at the
garden and asked her husband to get some vegetables.

As he loved his wife, he quietly entered the garden and gathered some
vegetables. Suddenly the witch came there shouted at him for stealing the
vegetables. He shook with fear and said that he was taking the vegetables for his
childless wife.

The witch said that he could go but when a child was born to them she
wanted it. The young man agreed and quickly ran away from there. Soon a baby girl
was born to the couple. The witch came and took away the baby. The mother cried a
lot. The witch looked after the girl who was called Rapunzel.

She thought the witch was her mother. At twelve years of age Rapunzel was
taken to a forest and locked up in a tower. The witch did not want Rapunzel to meet
anyone or know anything.

The tower had no door or stairway. There was only a small window at the top.
Whenever the witch came to see Rapunzel she called out “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let
down your hair.” Soon Rapunzel would let her long plaited golden hair down from the
window. The witch could climb up.

Rapunzel would spend the whole day singing in a melodious voice. One day,
a Prince passed by the tower and heard her beautiful voice. He hid himself among
some trees nearby to see who was singing.

Soon he saw the witch coming there and how she climbed up. After sometime
the witch went away. Rapunzel was all alone. The prince went near the tower and
called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair.” The prince climbed up and
Rapunzel was shocked to see him. She had not seen another human being all these
days. When she saw how kind and gentle he was, she started liking him.
Soon the prince started visiting her frequently and they fell in love. One day,
as the witch called out to Rapunzel, she let out her hair as usual. As the witch
climbed up she said, “Mother, why are you heavier than my prince?” The witch
become angry and cut off Rapunzel’s lovely hair. She took Rapunzel to a lonely part
of the forest and left her there.

She then hid inside the tower. When the prince came and called Rapunzel,
the witch let out the plait. The Prince climbed up eager to meet Rapunzel. When the
witch saw the Prince she said she would punish him. Seeing Rapunzel’s plait in the
witch’s hand the prince thought that Rapunzel was dead.

He jumped down from the tower’s window. The witch thought that he would
die because of the fall. However the prince had lost his eyesight in the fall. He
wandered in the forest very sadly. Soon he heard the voice of Rapunzel and followed
the song.

When Rapunzel saw him she came running into his arms. Seeing the prince
blind she started crying. When two drops of her tears fell on his eyes he could see
again. Both were overjoyed and the prince took Rapunzel to his kingdom. They were
married and lived happily ever after.
