Established in 2002, the Tongyeong International Music Festival (TIMF) has become one of the most respected and
influential classical music festivals in Asia, earning the moniker "the Salzburg Festival of Asia" by the German
Frankfurter Allgemeine Newspaper. Dedicated to the legacy of Isang Yun, the German-Korean composer born in
Tongyeong, the festival not only pays homage to Yun's music but also fosters emerging talents and presents contemporary
compositions.
The Tongyeong International Music Festival 2024 will feature prominent figures including violist Antoine Tamestit,
pianist Bertrand Chamayou, and flutist Emmanuel Pahud, all serving as Artists in Residence. Péter Eötvös, the Hungarian
composer known for contemporary classical music, was designated as the Composer in Residence for the festival.
However, he sadly passed away on March 24, just before the festival's opening. To honor his legacy, his compositions
will be featured throughout the festival.
The Tongyeong Festival Orchestra will perform Berlioz's "Harold in Italy" (featuring Antoine Tamestit) and Rimsky-
Korsakov's "Scheherazade" at the opening concert of the festival. The program for the performance on March 31st will
include Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand (featuring Bertrand Chamayou),
Debussy's "La Mer," among others. The finale concert will feature Marc-André Dalbavie's Flute Concerto (featuring
Emmanuel Pahud), Eötvös's "Speaking Drums," and Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique."
Stanislav Kochanovsky, who will conduct the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra at the opening and March 31st
performances, is a conductor who will serve as the music director of the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover starting
from the 2024/25 season. Markus Stenz, who will conduct the finale concert, has served as the music director of the
Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and principal guest conductor of the Seoul
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Highlighted works presented at the Tongyeong International Music Festival 2024 include the Korean Premiere of Péter
Eötvös's "Secret Kiss" (2018), commissioned jointly by the Tongyeong International Music Foundation with Wigmore
Hall in London, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and others, and the Asian Premiere of "Aurora" (2019) by the same

which were scheduled for their Korean premieres in Tongyeong in 2020 but were canceled due to the COVID-19
