Prime Factorization - Lesson 1 - 1.4.2016
6NS.4 MA.4.a Apply number theory concepts, including prime factorization and relatively prime
numbers to the solution of problems.
Objectives:
Students will factor numbers.
Students will find the prime factorization of numbers
Students will explain their reasoning using math vocabulary and restate the reasoning shared by
others.
Sentence Frames:
______ is a factor of _______ because you can multiply _____ by _____ (and ____) and get a product of ____.
_______ is a prime number because it only has _____ factors, 1 and ________.
The prime factorization of _________________ is __________________________________.
______ and ______ have common factors of _______________________________________.
Do Now:
Opening exercises. Work in partners to find the solution.
o If guidance is needed ask:
What numbers is 20 divisible by? How can you use the divisibility rules to find what
numbers 20 is divisible by? How does knowing the numbers that 20 is divisible by
help you arrange 20 dancers in rows?
Launch:
Review warm up. Look at the arrangements and introduce vocabulary - factor.
Do another example of finding factors – 24 pears arranged in a box.
Look for or do a “think aloud” to demonstrate the use of unit language. Introduce vocabulary –
prime number, composite number, prime factorization.
Ask – Can two composite numbers have the same prime factorization?
Explore:
Triple Prime Time Game (partners in a group of 4)
Explain and demonstrate the game
Summarize:
Review 2 select numbers from the game. Write out their prime factorizations. Have students write in
their journals a sentence about each number and its factors using the words (composite number, prime
number, factor and prime factorization) from the talk box.
