Programming Team @ GCT - A Proposal

Dear friends,

My name is Rajkumar Madhuram (Raj), class of 1995 CSE. I am passionate about coding and
software development. Here are some of my thoughts on why we need a strong coding culture
at GCT and develop strong teams to compete in World level competitions.

Why are coding skills important?

● It can help you build great products as engineers and entrepreneurs.

● It will help you solve complex problems on a global scale.
● It can help you find interesting jobs.
● It will help you in your career.

Coding contests are all about problem-solving, creativity, and challenges. It is a great joy when
we see our GCTians doing well, winning hackathons and inter-collegiate contests within
Tamilnadu or India. But we cannot be contemptuous. We should strive to compete and win at
the international level! I want to introduce to you the most prestigious competition, the
ACM-ICPC.

What is ICPC?

The ACM-ICPC (Association for Computing Machinery — International Collegiate Programming

Contest, Website: https://icpc.global/) is a multi-tier, team-based, programming competition. It is
considered as the “Olympics of Programming Competitions”. It is quite simply, the oldest,
largest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world. [Reference]

Colleges can field multiple teams at the Regionals level. Usually, the top 2 teams from each
region make it to the World finals, held at a different university around the world each year.
Do Indian colleges participate in the ICPC?

Yes, They do!

All over the world, > 50,000 students from more than 3,000 universities compete. Several
hundred Indian colleges also participate at various levels.

If you look at last year’s World final results, https://icpc.global/worldfinals/results, you can spot
several IITs in the list, with IIT Madras & Roorkee finishing 41st in the world, which is very
impressive.

Can we have a team for GCT?

Yes, absolutely! Here’s why I think we must have GCT team(s):

● It increases the exposure of challenging problems, and hence algorithms & techniques
to our students.
● It will provide a lot of problem solving and team work experience.
● It will increase the stature of our college when we do well.

Usually colleges form one or more teams. If many students are interested, they usually have a
try-out and pick the top performers and form teams. There must be a coach who should be a
faculty member.

How can we get started?

I believe that if students, faculty and alumni can work together, we can produce world class
teams year after year.
Group Responsibility Benefits

Students ● Have passion for problem ● Improve coding skills.

solving and coding. ● Learn teamwork.
● Work hard, practice a lot. ● Win accolades, jobs, seats for
higher education etc.

Faculty ● Assist with logistics. ● Enhance the college's image.

● Coaching ● Build up students

Alumni ● Provide mentoring ● Build up students

● Funding opportunities ● Recruitment opportunities

About Me:

I love to code and build products. In fact, I built my first commercial software when I was doing
my first year at GCT when living in Vaigai Illam :)

I have participated in several coding contests, right from my high school, during my time at GCT,
when I did my Masters at UCF (University of Central Florida), Orlando, and throughout my
professional life. Our UCF team was placed 6th in the SouthEast US Regionals in the ACM
ICPC. I believe that programming contests definitely helped with my coding skills over the years.
