DEFINITIONS

GENERAL CONCEPTS

In all tire related service work it is important to clearly define

and standardize the metallic stands to be used in tire
changes. Taking short cuts and Improvising the way in
which to support equipment when tire changes are being
performed have resulted in serious incidents causing harm
to both personnel and property.

FIXED HEIGHT STAND

This type of stand is commonly found in most

operations. Generally, these stands are
designated to one model and axle of specific
equipment due to their fixed height. They are
manufactured in different sizes, materials and
shapes and are used in most applications due to
their ease of construction and low cost. All
stands must have a load rating certificate signed
and authorized by a professional engineer.

VARIABLE HEIGHT STANDS

This type of stand is ideal for a site with a large

variety of equipment models as this stand
provides the ability to adjust to various
heights, considerably reducing the total
number of stands required on site. The cost is
typically higher than a fixed height stand, but
the savings could be considerate due to the
decreased variety of stand (heights) required.
Although most variable height stands are

manufactured by specialized companies, the
load rating certificate must still be identified.

EXTENSIONS

Extensions are accessories that are used to

increase the height of a fixed height stand. The
stand must be of the appropriate design to install
an extension and it is recommended that no more
than one extension be used at any given time.

On KOMATSU 830, 930 and 960 it is acceptableto lift the full front axle. On other equipment it
is recommended that only one axle at a time be lifted due to potential instability issues and
the risk of the equipment falling. However, in order to lift the full axle, special stands must be
used.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Proper Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when handling support stands

Stands
Chaleco Reflectante Guantes de Seguridad

All equipment must be supported by a stand prior to

beginning a tire change. Always be sure to use a
stand that is close to the approximate height
required to minimize the use of unnecessary
extensions or blocking.

Verify that the stand has a manufacturer

certification and/or engineering calculation done by
a professional engineer guaranteeing the load
capacity of the stand. Only use certified stands and
extensions.

All stands must be labeled with its maximum load

capacity

Participate in this task only if you have been trained

to do so, if not you must request training from your
supervisor.
15
The hydraulic jack must be used for lifting or
lowering the equipment only, it must never be
used to support the unit. Hydraulic gaskets may
become damaged, generating oil leaks that could
retract the cylinder causing the equipment to fall.
Some jacks are equipped with load holding
accessories that can be used during the initial lift of
the equipment until the solid stand is installed.
However, these load holding accessories can
never take the place of a stand. (See Kal Tire

Only lift the full axle if you have a stand with wide
base support like that used on a Komatsu 930.

Always use the stand carrier for transporting

stands.

Avoid Slips
Use a thin rubber plate to avoid slippage Frame Stand
between the stand and frame metals. If this is
not available wood can be used as a second
option, however, wood generates too much
trash and is not reusable.
Rubber or

Rubber application between

metallic surfaces

Do not install large pieces of wood to achieve the desired height. Wood can break
under load and cause a serious accident.

Be sure that the contact surfaces are free of lubricants or any other material that may
cause slip.
16
Remove from Service
Stands with deformations due to material fatigue, for example dents, that weakens the original condition
of the design.
Stands with cracks or defective parts on the structure's welding, for example fissures.

Surface Conditions – Unstable Ground

It is recommended to use metal plates with
adequate dimensions and thickness in places where
the ground is unstable or soft to avoid destabilizing

the stand. For this reason, all sites must have a plate
available such that outlined in the diagram.
