Topic: “Use weather instruments to measure the different weather components

(S4ES-IVe-5)”
Weather is a state of the atmosphere at a particular place during a short period of time. It
changes from hour-to-hour or day-to-day in different places. Weather help you decide what games
to play and what clothes to wear.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WEATHER COMPONENTS AND INSTRUMENTS?
Different Weather Instruments:
1. Thermometer is used to measure air temperature. A temperature is the hotness and coldness of air a

2. Barometer is a scientific instrument used to

measure atmospheric pressure, also called barometric pressure.

3. Wind vane is a device that tells the direction of the wind. Wind direction is the direction
from which the wind is blowing. The direction of the wind helps us predict the weather. The
four letters from wind vane represents to East, West, North, and South.
4. Hygrometer – it measures the water vapor content of the air.

5. Anemometer measures wind speed. The speed of the wind may be fast or slow.
Sometimes it blows gently but sometimes it blows fast.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS THAT AFFECTS WEATHER?

Different Weather Components:
1. Temperature – is the hotness and coldness of the atmosphere depending on the amount
of sunlight that enters the earth.
2. Air pressure – is the result of the pressure created by the weight of the air in the Earth’s
surface. Air Mass is the amount of matter in a substance.
3. Wind – is air in motion. Wind affects air temperature. Wind is the rising and sinking of air
called convection.
4. Clouds – are made up of a large collections of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystal.
5. Humidity – is the amount of water vapor in the air. It is measured by an instrument called
a hygrometer.
6. Precipitation - is what comes down to Earth from the clouds.
